“Great breakfast, rooms could do with updating”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

Stayed here for two nights as we were visiting the Edinburgh Festival. Two years ago we stayed at the B&B next door as B&B guests have breakfast at Ricks, so we knew how lovely this was. So this time decided to treat ourselves to a stay in the hotel. The place is lovely. Very stylish and as mentioned the breakfast is fantastic. The rooms however could do with updating. Really nice beds and linen, but the curtain was hanging off at the window in our room and the bathrooms could do with some TLC, as some of the grouting not very clean now. The noise however is terrible. Unfortunately it can't be helped that the rooms back over a cobbled street that is regularly visited by the dustbin men very early in the morning to empty all the bins, plus when we were there an alarm was going for about an hour before going off. Overall the hotel is very nice and if the rooms were just tended to a little then it would be perfect - just remember to take earplugs!

Boutique stylish hotel with great staff in bar and restaurant. Food excellent, both at breakfast and in the restaurant. Just avoid room 2 which faces onto the back lane and local businesses' trash bins which get emptied very early in the morning!

We stay at Ricks every year for two nights during the Edinburgh festival. It's good value and a great central hotel. Rooms are a tad dark, but nothing that a bright dressing table lamp could sort. The food is good value and good quality - especially the breakfasts. The staff make you feel very welcome and I thoroughly recommend the hotel. As everyone says, the only downside is the bins/bottle bank emptying outside the window in the early hours, but not something Ricks can do anything about I imagine.

Edinburgh is always a good night out on a sunday and we got a good deal at Ricks on Dinner bed and breakfast rate.
This was our second stay and also had lunch which was good and well priced.
Rooms still ok but noise in the morning the main drawback but did not bother us to much.
All in all a good stay.

From check in onwards the staff here are committed to making your stay a good one. The lovely lady on reception seems to never go home as she was there morning, noon and night yet always smiling. We left our bags as we arrived very early and when we came back they were in our room. Bigger hotels struggle to acheive that. They offered us complimentary tea and coffee on arrival and when my umbrella broke in a typical Edinburgh shower the guy on reception immediately gave me another. And again with lots of smiles and banter which is what makes you feel so looked after - they genuinely seem interested in you as customers and bigger hotels definitely struggle to achieve that!

Yes there is noise from the street outside at night. But the hotel is just off one of the main shopping streets and is surrounded by bars and restaurants. What do people expect?! I was on the 2nd floor so the noise was reduced I'm sure but it was still fine.

The rooms are well equiped and the ipod and straighteners are a lovely touch. I've stayed in their sister hotel Tiger Lily and whilst the rooms there are better decorated and maintained (there were quite a few chips and cracks in the furniture and bathroom in the room) I would rather stay here any day as it just has a nicer, more welcoming and relaxed vibe. The rooms seem to be kept very clean by two very happy cleaners - the only downfall being that the stairs to the rooms weren't swept once in the 3 days we were there.

The bar is great too - busy at times but with a good buzz. There are some good drinks and food offers on week days as well although the cocktails may seem good value but taste a lot weaker than in other cocktail bars in town.

Breakfast is good although it would be nice to help yourself to juice and fruit as you do normally in hotels.

Overall though it is the staff that make this a great hotel. Great value and good fun. And the location is fantastic as you are so close to everything that this beautiful city has to offer.

Room Tip: 2nd floor or above

I've been staying here for work on several occasions throughout 2013 as my office is just around the corner and I don't live locally.

The level of service is very consistent and is a very stylish and modern place to stay in the centre of Edinburgh.

All of the rooms are comfortable and stylish. The staff are fantastic and very helpful and friendly. Breakfast's are superb. Not an extensive menu for those like me who may stay for a reasonable amount of time but all the food is prepared fresh. The hotel bar is good as well (as are all other Montpellier owned bars in Edinburgh; such as Tigerlily and Indigo Yard)

One point to note is that on some occasions you may be woken early by the refuse collectors that come down the back lane that all rooms face on to. For some reason there can be many of these trucks in one morning rather than one to collect all rubbish. Not the hotel's fault though!

Overall, a great place to stay in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Only 12 rooms and all face the back lane so no real difference in rooms.

We have just had our 2nd Saturday night in this small, city centre hotel and unfortuantely we wont be having a 3rd. The hotel and rooms are excellent however, the noise from the street adjacent was unbearable. Ok, the Festival was getting into gear and some noise was exepected but even allowing for that it was terrible. The staff were excellent as usual however better soundproofing is required before we would go back. - a real shame.
