“Takin over the asylem”

We visited the theatre for the first time at the weekend, i booked box F as a treat which said it had a restricted view, in our local theatre "restricted view" means you can not see a small part of the stage. From our seats in the Lyceum we could not see around half of the stage. I asked a member of staff if there was any chance we could move seats as it was not a busy performance, she came back and said no and if we wanted other seats we would have to go to the box office and pay extra, as this was around 3 minutes before the show started we would have missed the beginning. I have been in theatres in London were the view was not perfect and there have been no problem with moving seats so I could not see the problem here if the seats were empty.
So my point in this story do not sit in a box!!!

Apart from that the show was brilliant, the story is both funny and dramatic, with unexpected turns and fantastic acting. Just disappointing that we could not see it all.

“wonderful cosy theatre”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

forget about the big venues if you want something a bit more intimate. This wonderful theatre provides regular high quality theatre where every seat generally means a good view, rather than trying to peer at the stage from way back. They also have a lovely little bar beside the dress circle

“My favourite Edinburgh theatre”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

I enjoy live performances across Edinburgh's venues. The Lyceum is my favourite venue due to its size, decor and the intimacy that is generated during productions here.

The front office staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the productions that are taking place so worth having a chat with if you arrive early.

The productions are always intriguing and thought provoking with a diversity in the performances that you see throughout the year.

“This is a good theatre.”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

The Lyceum has a good modern foyer, one can book e-tickets and the staff are really nice and helpful. Inside, the old, lovable theatre styling is there, but it is clean and comfy. One feels at home. Costs are perfectly acceptable for well-produced productions and this was our second visit - there will be many more over the years. Previously we had seen an incredibly good production of The Price by Arthur Miller - a four part tour de force which was deeply impressive and wonderfully acted. This time we saw "Time and the Conways" by J B Priestley. This is a difficult play to produce with its 20 year time shifts and cast of ten (6 female, 4 male). It was nearing its transfer date to Dundee Rep, so everyone was polished and into their parts. You really did need to read the programme carefully beforehand and to concentrate hard throughout because it is elaborate fast dialogue. We enjoyed it very much, would have liked a less minimal, more convincing stage set and the play does have a seemingly inconclusive and tricky ending. However, this was, for us, time well spent. It is a joy to confirm how much more theatre can give than any form of recorded entertainment.

“Home from home”
Reviewed March 1, 2013

We've been coming here for many years and still love the warm, friendly atmosphere fostered by Jacqui and her Front of House Team. The productions are varied and the best ones have stuck in our memories far more than the very occasional dud! The sets are almost always stunning and there's lots going on behind the scenes with courses and pre and post show discussions plus real efforts to reach out to the wider community. Wheelchair users will get some of the best seats in the house (at fantastic prices). What's not to love?
