We had spent part of the morning at the Scottish Parliament and I knew that there was a great pub nearby that I had visited previously with work colleagues where we could have lunch. When we arrived at the Kilderkin I was initially confused as I remembered it as being called the 'Jenny Ha's'. The barman resolved the issue by confirming that that had been the name up until a couple of years ago. So I had found the right establishment.

As for lunch it was great. I had 'Bangers and Mash' which was served with three different absolutely excellent sausages. I think that one was wild boar, another pork, and the third was bacon and black pudding. Karen had the daily special which was Chilli Beef in filo pastry parcels served with a spicy cheese sauce, rice and nachos. I also had a pint of Orkney Dark Island beer - wonderful stuff, while Karen had a glass of white wine. The service time was what you would expect for food that was being freshly prepared. As the pub wasn't busy and there was no loud background music we were able to enjoy our drinks and chat before lunch was brought to us.

If ever in the area again at lunchtime we will certainly return.

Glad you enjoyed your lunch.
Our chefs specials often have a Mexican theme and the chilli filo parcels are my personal favourite.
Thanks for the review.

Beer was very fresh. Service was friendly, and ambience was nice. The good part was the haggis. Well made, and quite tasty. Other food (miscellaneous pub food) was also well done. It is a good place to bring the family; however, bear in mind that if you bring young kids, you have to order food. Not just a drink or soda for the little ones. Even if it is day time.

Wow, this place is awesome. Excellent selection of beers, but the food is what got us. Two of us had a chorizo special that was out of this world. UNBELIEVABLE. The two who had this raved for the entire trip. The other two had a wrap and a vegetable burger, both of which were excellent as well. HIGHLY recommend this place!

Popped in for a pizza on the way home as we've been meaning to try out the huge range of musically named pizzas for some time. There's a great range with some unusual additions to the normal pizza range - including breakfast, curry, duck and black pudding toppings (not all together thankfully)!
I went for something a little more traditional with the Smokey Robinson (BBQ chicken, bacon, smoked paprika and cheddar). The pizza was tasty but a little more of a kick from the paprika would of lived it up. Sadly though I think someone forgot to take it from the oven and although the top was delightful the base was as black as coal and the taste of charcoal was overpowering.
Sort this and it's a great spot for a cheap and tasty meal stop.

Kilderkin came highly recommended as a whisky bar, but happenstance for us it also has to be the best rum bar in Edinburgh (maybe even the North). James - the landlord - is really knowledgeable about his drinks, selected by himself from his travels, with accompanying stories of provenance - a truly lovely gentleman, who is more than willing to spend time with you discussing and sharing his fine selection. The triumph behind the bar was Black Tot - the last rum ration from 1970 - an important landmark from naval and rum history. And if just like whisky, rum speaks of its place - every island, country, and distillery has its own style and flavour - what makes Kilderkin so special is that James is more than happy to join you on that journey. The human spirit really needs more places like Kilderkin.
