We only happened upon this little Chinese restaurant because it was across the road from where we were staying in Edinburgh and it happened to be tea time after a long day of driving. I am so pleased we decided to try it!

You can see fairly quickly that this is one of the places that the locals know about and keep coming back to. We decided to eat-in - slightly dearer than takeaway but still good value because of the service we received. In the hour and a half that we were there there was a steady stream of customers and most seemed like regulars. That's always a very good sign.

The Shangri-La isn't all flash and glam. In fact, it reminds me of the Chinese restaurants that my husband and I used to eat at before Chinese meals lost their popularity to Thai in Australia. That in itself made the experience fun: it was a nice reminder of our courting days :-)

There was a good choice of meals on offer. The most expensive was around nine pounds - a mixed seafood which included a good variety of seafood and vegetables: not just the odd frozen prawn and lots of onion as some establishments might serve up. Other dine-in dishes, from memory, were around the seven-eight pound mark. The portion sizes were generous and we felt offered good value for what we paid.

Special mention must be made of the service we received at the Shangri-La. Friendly, warm and service you'd expect from a more high-dollar establishment - right down to warmed plates, warm towels and chocolates to end our meal.

In all, this little find was a treat! It is a 15-20 minute walk or short bus ride from the centre of Edinburgh. Look for it if you are in the area. The Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant and Takeaway certainly offers delicious well cooked Chinese dishes, good dining value and very friendly service.

Found this place, whilst looking for restaurant reviews. We gave it a try, and was very lucky to find it. A few people waiting for orders at the bar, but otherwise, we were the only ones in there. It was definitely big enough to cater for a lot more people than just the three of us. Nicely decorated inside, an intimate atmosphere/setting. The host was so accommodating, and was excellent at making us feel welcome. The food was great, not to heavy and enough of it...a good balance. Everything was clean and well presented. Would definitely recommend this place. It's just under a 15 min walk from the city center, but if you're good with navigating a map on a phone, you could probably walk it in 10 mins! Worth the walk though. I can only blame its location for it not being busier, its tucked away a bit, however they did seem to be taking a lot of telephone takeaway orders...which I take to be a good sign!

We have been coming to this restaurant on and off for about 10 years. We first came here because we used to live round the corner, but now we're a bit further afield we come to the restaurant less but get more takeaways! Diane and her team are charming, the food is always freshly made and really tasty, and the ambience is so laid back you never feel pressured to leave. Would recommend 100%.
