Stayed at Gifford House for two days/nights and could not have been made more welcome by hosts Margaret and David. Room was huge and well decorated and the breakfast was superb and cooked to order. The choices were numerous with cereals, normal english as well as kippers and haggis if you wanted it. Parking was a problem two or three streets behind the B & B, however with the superb bus service just across the road, it was better to the leave the car anyway. Its either a 20-30 minute walk or a £1.20 bus ride which takes 10 minutes. I cannot fault this B & B, and when I visit the area again I will try and stay here. My daughter and family will be visiting Edinburgh in August and will be staying at Gifford House if there are any vacancies.

Gifford House is quite possibly as good a Guest House you are likely to visit. It is an excellent location, being just a 15 minute walk from the centre with the option of a regular bus service just across the road.
The hosts Margaret and David make your stay as welcoming as possible from the moment you arrive and will do all they can to make your stay as pleasurable as they can.
The Gifford is spotlessly clean, with the rooms first class. The attention to detail is really warming, with a chance to catch up on any number of DVD's that are left at reception for you to watch on the tv/dvd player in your room.
For breakfast you could not imagine a better start to the day. The hearty English Breakfast is superb with no limit on what the hosts will cook for you. It is as good as anything you are likely to eat anywhere in the City.
We stayed there for just two nights, which was not enough!
I would recommend this Guest House to anyone and you would not be disappointed.

Great old house with comfortable rooms. Very amiable and helpful host.
A bit to far to walk to the royal mile for seniors, but bus stop in right accross the street

I spent two nights in July 2007 at this very pleasant B & B about a mile from the center of Edinburgh (where the main train station, Waverly, is located). Cab ride was about £5. Look for Gifford House's own website for the latest information on pricing and direct contact numbers. The owners, Margaret and David, provide extras that are very thoughtful, including hairdryers in the room, a reading lamp near the bed, hangers in the closet, shampoo and even a wash cloth (rare in Europe!). It is easy to catch one of a number of buses into town (although finding one to go home late at night is a bit harder -- be prepared for a gentle walk up hill, perhaps stopping at a friendly pub along the way!). I also recommend taking a walk around the block behind the guest house, following the signs to the golf course, for a beautiful view of the mountain, Arthur's Seat, from the first tee! There is so much to see in Edinburgh that two days were in no way enough and I look forward to returning. Especially recommend the tour of the former Royal Yacht Britainnia, for a surprising, intimate view of almost 50 years of life in the Royal family -- and you can find reasonably priced shopping (or the latest movie) at the adjacent mall if your children are restless from too many museums!

After staying at numerous hotels in Edinburgh, at a comfort level well below the Gifford and at a very high price, I ended up searching for a B & B. I ended up staying at the Gifford and now I stay there every month while on business. The rooms are very spacious, clean and very nicely decorated. The owners, Margaret and David, are very helpful and go the distance to help you out in every aspect possible ( I leave very early in the mornings so they put a fridge in the breakfast room with things I want so I can eat before I leave). I feel it is like being home away from home and use the same room. I would recommend this place to anyone even my mother ;0)

The location is fine, right by the Commonwealth Swimming pool, and the entrance to Holyrood Park, giving you the opportunity of a pleasant stroll along the Crags to Holyrood Palace and then onto the Royal Mile. Walking along the main road takes about 20 minutes, and you pass a good variety of eating places, although mostly budget rather than quality. You also pass a number of more traditional pubs, mostly very friendly and some with excellent beer (Particularly The Southsider). There are frequent busses there if you do not fancy the walk.

The Hotel is pretty good. Rooms are small, and the en-suite facilities are incredibly 'compact'. But you don't spend your holiday in the room, it has TV and tea/ coffee facilities, so that does not bother me at all. Breakfast is top notch and freshly cooked to order. A friendly welcome is guaranteed, and when on business, I preferred the Gifford to the more expensive impersonal chain Hotels that cost a lot more.
