“A feel of Paris in Edinburgh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

Right off the Meadows, and around the corner from the Royal Sick Kids, Victor Hugo's is perfect positioned to seduce you off your walk and let you enjoy everything from coffee to a wide selection of cafe meals before you set off again. We stop here regularly and have enjoyed everything from eggs benedict, to hot teas and mochas, lovely sandwiches, and absolutely wonderful homemade soups. The outdoor seating is covered with an awning and provides good protection from rain or sun, depending on the day. Perfect place to sip a cuppa and watch the Meadows on any day.

“Tedious Waits”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013 via mobile

The food in Victor Hugo is tasty and often perfectly reasonable for a premium delicatessen. The shop and café sits in an ideal location on the edge of the meadows.

It could be great.

It's not.

My major gripes are the service and system for preparation of food. There generally appear to be five floor staff attending on weekends, yet the organisation seems ramshackle. I have seen the assembly of even the most rudimentary dishes (sandwiches and jacket potatoes) take upwards of ten, tedious minutes, even when there are visibly more staff instore than clientele. It would be unfair to disparage the service staff, some are charming. The majority, however, appear disinterested and lethargic, and ordering anything visually upsets them by virtue of interrupting the important business of moping around looking sullen.

Please try a bit harder. With just a bit of work this place could be great.

“Busy deli”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2013

We had 2 takeaway coffees ,shared a huge sandwich and with pizza for 2 kids it was £14 for all four of us. We then ate in the large play area nearby where the kids could run around and we could sit and enjoy our picnic. The coffee was excellent and the sandwich (A Basque-chorizo,manchego, tomatoes and harissa) was delicious and plenty even between two of us.

“VERY GOOD VALUE”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2013

I heard that the Eggs Benedict were very good-they are! and good value. So too is the hot chocolate. The baguettes look delicious and I will be back soon for one of those. The recent negative review was in my opinion overtly personal, spiteful and completely inaccurate. So the owner spends a lot of time there-sorry? Don't you want to see Gordon Ramsay at his restaurant? What self respecting owner would not spend time in his restaurant. A hands on approach clearly works.

“Great cheese selection”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2013

We went there with a group of friends just to eat cheese. They have a good selection and 8 of us paid just £2 each!! I would go back for the cheese but it feels like the space could do with a bit of updating in some areas.
