Pretty good exhibits talking about indigenous peoples, animals, technology, and of course the history of Scotland including some golf. This place is great for kids and adults that enjoy a more interactive museum experience. Lots of things visitors are allowed to touch, games, things to climb on, and interactive media. I would not recommend the National Museum of Scotland for the super serious museum goers. But for the casual tourist or someone with an armload of kids, this stop is a must. Also, FREE.

This free museum has a lot to offer and I mean a lot!! There is a vast range of sections and styles of exhibit from glass cases with objects in to recreated highland cottages and machinery. The roof terrace is well worth a visit too as it boasts spectacular views across Edinburgh. Sometimes it's hard to know where to go next as there is so much to see with little direction but it does mean you can skips bits if you wish or accidentally miss bits!

I don't know why, but going to this museum was not at the top of our sightseeing list on our recent trip to Edinburgh -- but it should have been! Fortunately, we did get there after lunch on our last day, and it was incredible! We thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits on Scottish life over time, as well as communications (great hands-on for kids), animals, amber (special exhibit), aborigines... and then the fie alarm went off. :( So, unfortunately our visit was shorter than we wished, but we will be sure to make up for it next time. Next time, this museum gets high priority in our schedule!

The museum has an incredible quantity of artifacts and exhibits which means you can spend as much time there as you'd like. Tons of great stuff for children as well. Worth the visit--especially since it's free!

Absolutely loved this museum, especially the Scots department. I liked the weird Burke and Hare miniature coffins on the 4th floor. There are lots of hands on things to do too.
