Exceptional food, beautifully presented with faultless service. The Dragon Roll is absolutely out of this world. Travel far to eat here.

We had an early dinner after shopping stop at Kanpai. The place was full when we left so we recommend you book your table. We had grilled salmon uramaki, king prawn tempura uramaki (containing cheese, unusual and tasty!), classic California roll and salmon sashimi, all great!

After having a great meal here a month or two back we decided to make sure it wasn't just luck, and headed back recently. And I'm glad to say we weren't disappointed.

Tucked away on Grindlay Street this is well worth seeking out. A lovely, simple, couple of rooms; friendly service; and an easy, not-too-full-but-not-too-stingey menu to tantalise. In both trips we've worked our way through various selections, then found ourselves ordering a couple more dishes, just not wanting the meal to finish.

Stand out dish? The octopus fish balls are, quite simply, stunning. But the various items of sashimi and nigiri easily hold their own; while tempura battered squid rings, perhaps something of a lowbrow option in such a menu, are cooked to absolute perfection.

Am I selling this enough? Any of the fish you order tastes perfectly fresh; the cooked items hit the spot excellently; and I've even been brought round to aubergine (something of a pet hate for me) with a brilliantly prepared miso-grilled offering.

For three of us the whole meal came to just over £90, with £30 of that being alcohol (itself very reasonably priced). So £20 a head on the food; £30 a head altogether; and one of the best meals you'll get in the city. The only gripe? Everything comes out pretty quickly, which just means the meal is over far too quickly...

I was reccomended to try this place by a friend as Im a bit of a sushi novice and it didnt dissapoint. We ordered 5 dishes but the one that stood out the most was the seared tuna with miso dressing, amazing! The restaraunt has a nice atmosphere and the staff were great. The dishes arnt cheap but id say its worth it when the food tastes that good.

I took my girlfriend who has never had sushi or been in a Japanese restaurant before, and it converted her to Japanese cuisine. It was magnificent, the artistic dragon rolls tasted great and were beautifully presented, the unagi was exquisite, the sake list was short but very good. Will absolutely make time to go here every time I visit Edinburgh. ( along with haggis at the abbotsford ;-). )
