Description: This new restaurant has been opened 2-3 months, on the premises of a former Italian restaurant. It is not to be confused with is smaller sister cafe/restaurant with slightly different spelling - Kampong Ah Lee, Nicolson Street, Edinburgh. The same family owners have opened up this much larger premises with a view of a proper restaurant, whereas its smaller sister which still exists caters for the local asian student population of Edinburgh area and of course the public. Opening hours of this new premises are Mon-Thu 12 noon to 3pm, then 5pm to 11pm. Fri/Sat/Sun 12 noon to 11pm. I will place a positive review once you have created a site for it, regards, Dave

“Excellent food and service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2014 via mobile

We went there for a late lunch as we had big breakfast in the morning and needed some food before the Military Tattoo show! The dishes were excellent albeit portions were on the smaller side. Bubble tea of different flavours were also very tasty (after trying the same in London the day before). Good service as well!!

“Unimpressed”

I stopped at their street stall during the Festival and was very disappointed when I saw that my roti canai came from a freezer, rather than being prepared by hand.

“An escape in August”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

If you are looking for somewhere to escape in August then this is a good bet. It is in no way a tourist trap and actually it seems that a lot of local Malaysian families dine here earlier in the evening which makes for a far nicer atmosphere. The food was very good value and vastly cheaper than anywhere in Old Town. There is plenty of variety and the servings are big but I would not say that it is excellent quality. You essentially get what you pay for but I was certainly happy with that. The waiting staff are lovely and there was never a sense of being rushed away from our tables as there is at busy times in other restaurants. Not a high end restaurant but a nice way to spend an evening.

“Authentic Malaysian”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2014

Have been here too many times to count now so overdue for a review. I can happily state this restaurant is consistent and reliable. As a family (and friends) we usually get mixed sate (proper spicy peanut sauce), pickled veg, Haianese Chicken Rice (which, in response to another reviewer, does not usually come deboned, in all the countries I've eaten it, it is always cooked and served on the bone for maximum juicy flavour though I'm sure they will take it off the bone if it's an issue for you), Laksa (oh my), and many other dishes that never disappoint.
The lunch specials are great value. The staff are lovely.
Sister restaurant Kampung Ah Lee is less formal, less spacious but also great food. My family and I lived in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia so we can testify to the authenticity of flavours. Worth the ever-so slight detour off Lothian Road :-)

“Did they make up their own style?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2014 via mobile

Given the dishes we tried, we'd say the authenticity of some of the dishes from the restaurant are in question.

The menus seemed very Malaysian-like, but everything good stopped there.

The first sign was that the chicken served for the dish Hainan chicken [with] rice was not deboned. The sauce for the chicken was also missing.

The Nasi Lemak was at most, fair.

The Laksa was another disappointment, with garlic blindly overwhelming the taste of the chicken. The remaining components of the dish was fair and did not compensate the let down.

(Criticism of the above dishes stems from comparison with our experiences of Malaysian cuisine we tried in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Glasgow, and fading memories of Malaysia.)

Despite the above, their pearl tea is still worth a try. The green tea and the original variants were both above satisfactory.

Customer service somewhat existed.

While the restaurant did offer some sort of an atmosphere, we did not find the place very clean at all.

Headed to dine here after reading other reviews, this experience turned out to be a rather large disappointment.

Not recommended for dining, let alone getting a true taste of Malaysian cuisine. Awful.
