“what a shamballs”
Reviewed January 3, 2010

it was an awful ordeal.booked three rooms through centrel booking never again a month before arrival .when we arrived the bookings were all wrong we were booked for 2 nights not one as requisted , because of a mix up with my card the rooms had not been payed for ( they dont contact you at the time they just keep it as a surprise when you arrive) so after sorting out from a girl at recption i found very rude we only had to pay for one night as requested i payed cash but not every one can do that at short notice and could have ruined our time away. when my daughter arrived they told her she had to pay for her room i had allready done so but she was upset by all the hassel.I hpoe i never have stay there agin it was definatly a stop over hotel and would not recommend it as a weekend away .the only nice person we met was the polish boy that cleaned floor 2

Not the newest or plushest of rooms but you know what you get and at £85 for a room for family incuding breakfast we were not disappointed. Reception was very friendly. Hotel easy to find and easy to park. Room quiet enough, bed comforatable and bathroom fairly clean.

No complaints

Good points : room quiet, good choice at breakfast buffet, free parking, took bus into city center and didn't have more than 5 min wait.
Bad points: bed & pillow(s) uncomfortable, fire alarm at 3:00 on Saturday morning. Got impression from fireman that this was not their first call out to this hotel. Had to wait 35-40 mins outside in near freezing temperatures before getting back into room No offer of any compensation / drink / coffee etc. I know the hotel has to think of 'Health& Safety' etc, but it is totally ignoring customer relations.

Had a perfect stay at this hotel. We paid £70 for the room per night. I advise to book breakfast on arrival. It was £13.95 pp if you didn't, but only £9.95 if you did. Yes its expensive BUT you could eat as much as you wanted and there was so much choice to choose from. The room was spotless and the bed so comfy. We ate in the hotel bar a couple of times and again yes a little over priced but the food was good and of a high standard. We found all the staff extremely helpful indeed.
To get into Edinburgh it was a short taxi ride for £10 or on a bus £3 for a day pass, which we did do also. Bus stop right outside the hotel, but also a phone on reception desk to phone a taxi free. We were on an all night ghost hunt and the black out curtains, are in fact black out curtains we slept wonderfully, and no noise either. Our room was a twin smoking room on the 1st floor and backed onto the zoo and even the animal noise didn't keep us awake. Air conditioning in the room was great as we both liked it cold to sleep. The shower was fab, plenty of water pressure for a decent one. I honestly cannot fault anything about our stay AT ALL, Value for money, clean and everything we booked and paid for.

Have just returned from a long weekend at this hotel & it was great. We were in a family room which was very clean & comfortabe - although we could have done with extra pillows. We were lucky & never suffered any problems with noise. Breakfast was good with a wide variety, we purchased this in advance, & our kids certainly got their monies worth!!! Found the staff to be very helpful at breakfast, even delivering my 9 yr old son another piece of toast, after seeing the piece he had cooked himself was very black (the waiter did this without anyone asking - think he saw us laughing at the state of the toast!!!) We found the hotel overall to be very clean & tidy, and everyone we encountered to be extremely helpful. The only negative we have was the "Traders" restaurant. We had a meal on the Saturday night which was either £17.95 (2 courses) or £19.95 (3 courses). We chose to have the 2 courses (starter/main) & our children had the kids menu. It isn't stated anywhere that we could see, that the children have to have the same amount of courses as the adults, so much to the dissappointment of our children they had to go without pudding. I am well aware that the children eat free- but we felt we were being forced to have pudding so that our children could!!! The meal cost nearly £47 & was probably worth half that (only one vegetarian choice - & bottle of fizzy water was £3.77) My husband did make his feelings known to reception!!!!
Apart from that one hiccup, we found the hotel was a great base for exploring Edinburgh.

Hotel is conveniently located on the bus route between Edinburgh City and the Airport. Lovely large bedroom and bathroom with really nice toiletries. I stayed on a room only basis and it was well priced for Edinburgh. However, I skipped breakfast as the prices were ridiculously high! I would stay again as a stopover or would be excellent location for a family wishing to visit the zoo which is right next door. The staff were friendly and helpful. Only drawback was the real entrance to the hotel is not easily located from the bus stop and I ended up coming in a side entrance and carrying my heavy bag up steep stairs!
