“ANOTHER GREAT STAY”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

I think for anyone visiting Edinburgh the location of the Holiday Inn provides you with two excellent options . You are 10 minutes by bus from the city centre and the same time heading back to the airport or the motorway heading out of town. The Hotel itself provides you with an excellent breakfast and Sampans is a first class restaurant. on both occasions the staff were very friendly and helpful in advising me of what choices I could have as i suffer from Celiac Disease and require a strict gluten free diet. The room we had provided us with a stunning view over the southwest of Edinburgh and as the sun rose in the morning the views were spectacular. We will certainly return to the hotel again.

Thanks for such a gleaming review. Really glad to hear the team in Sampans looked after you so well, and that you enjoyed the panoramic views of the Pentland Hills to the south.

We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel. We arrived at the hotel before check in time but our room was ready and we were able to put our cases in before going straight next door to the zoo!

We stayed on a room only basis and never ate at the hotel so cannot comment on the quality of the food. Breakfast was £13.95 so we decided against breakfast in the hotel and went to Wetherspoons instead which was less than half that for both of us, even if you chose the 'large breakfast'. A few reviews have mentioned Wetherspoons for breakfast but give no directions - so if you turn right at the front of the hotel (away from the city) and walk for about half a mile it is on the right hand side of the road and is called the White Lady.

Our room at the hotel was on the fourth floor. It was a large room and overlooked the zoo. It was lovely and quiet and we only heard some exotic bird noises coming from the zoo in the morning. We could also see the gorilla enclosure! The beds were comfortable and there was everything you could need, except wi-fi, which there was a charge for both in the room and in public areas!

We had all intentions of going in the pool but spent so long in Edinburgh that we never ended up using it, although we did go and have a look at it - it was small and there was a jacuzzi, and it did look very inviting.

The hotel is just a bus journey into Edinburgh. If you use the 'Zoo' bus stop next to the hotel more buses stop here. The cost is £1.50 for a single ticket. A taxi costs £10.

A very enjoyable stay away from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, but near enough to get there and back easily.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor at the back overlook the zoo which may be a bit more interesting than overloo...

Thanks very much for sharing your experience. It is quite unique to hear the exotic birds and apes from the Zoo in the mornings.

Hopefully you'll have time to experience the swimming pool and our food on your next visit.

Been in April 2011. Close to the zoo and convenient to get public transport to the city. The hotel lift was overcrowded, may be busy season. The staffs at restaurants were very friendly and efficient to organize big table for our family.

Room were clean and comfy. We have enjoyed the stay.

Room Tip: We had rooms facing car park/zoo. Would be nice to have front view to see highlands.

This is a hotel to overnight in rather than enjoy.
The hotel is accessibly located between Edinburgh Airport and the city centre and the rooms are well equipped if basically furnished. Access to the rooms is via seemingly endless corridors (the longest in the UK?) and, although the staff (both on the front desk and elsewhere) try their best to compensate, the hotel lacks 'soul.' The hotel also boasts a fitness area (including indoor pool) as an additional attraction. However, and as if to underline the basic utilitarian functionality of the place, the hotel plays host to numerous tourist groups which can bottleneck Reception. In addition, a pregnancy advice van parked permanently outside the front of the hotel suggests other guest streams.
Although urged to make a reservation, both hotel restaurants were practically empty for dinner on the (saturday) night we stayed. Despite this, the Sampans chinese restaurant (where we ate) offered an acceptable standard - albeit to a menu uncharacteristically small for a Chinese eatery. Thanks, though, to the enterprise of front staff Daniel and Rohan and the back room chefs, we were offered non-menu dishes cooked to order.
Bottom line: hotel 3 stars; Sampans four - for a 3+ average. Viator Coloniae

Thank you for your review. While it is nice to see you have mentioned the high standard of the service the staff provide I am confused as to your mention of an advertisement you saw on your way to the hotel, whether on a van or a bus stop nearby, and how you have tied it in with our demographic.

You have very clearly misread a situation and it may result in damaging the view on this hotel if read in the context I believe you to have suggested, and therefore I shall be requesting your review is removed. I too saw an advertisement for pregnant women on my way to the hotel, and the advertisement was for 3D scans of unborn babies, I believe this to be the advertisement you saw. Completely unrelated to the Holiday Inn Edinburgh and far from what you described the advertisement to be.

Thank you again on your review of other aspects of the hotel and especially for mentioning a couple of team members who stood out as especially helpful.

Think twice before booking up this hotel. Reception is always massively overcrowded with large groups blocking reception up. My first impression of the room was OK, ended up in a room with a fairly nice view and quite a lot of space. Soon after settling in I realised something was odd about the room I was in, half drank bottle of water, spare key card in the room and creased sheets. Yes that is right the room had not been reset for a new guest. Simple thing to do!

Upon calling reception to explain the situation I was not apologised to, just told that it was very surprising. I was then moved to a smaller room (same grade) right in the corridor intersection which was noisy and stank of smoke. This bad experience has left me very disappointed and I will not stay here again. As I write this message I am also waiting for an Ironing board which I called for 57 minutes ago, another testament to poor service.

Room Tip: Avoid corridor intersection rooms, I am currently in one which is room 123. It is very noisy.

Please accept my sincerest apologies for our team checking you into a room which had not been serviced. This is something that can be easily avoided and was the result of poor communication between our front desk and housekeeping departments, something we normally get right every time.

Having to wait 57 minutes+ for an iron and ironing board is also unacceptable, and I can't imagine what circumstances resulted in this lengthy wait. I will investigate the situation and find out what went wrong, so as to avoid this happening in future. It is unfortunate that you timed your arrival with a tour group arriving, and I hope your check in experience was still efficient despite the number of bodies in the reception area.

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback. I do hope we get the opportunity to welcome you back after this unfortunate first impression, and show you what we are really capable of. If you'd like to speak with me directly regarding your experience, please contact me on the email address below.

Stayed here on 29/6/13 on a visit to the city but mainly to the zoo so this place was ideal as it's right next door. The hotel has free parking and was given a friendly welcome. Our room was on the top floor and we had a decent view over the carpark and could see in the zoo. The room was large, big double bed, sofa and another single bed. Bathroom had a big mirror and power shower. The room was clean and with ironing board, tv, hair dryer and tea making facilities. We didn't eat In the hotel but the menu looked good and yes it was slightly pricey but it's to be expected in a hotel especially in a city like Edinburgh. Had a quick drink in the bar and it was nice down there with friendly staff. The hotel is a fair walk to the centre but buses pass every ten minutes or so and £3.50 for an all day ticket was very cheap as we used it during the day and then in the evening to go out for a meal and drinks then back later on. Overall this is a very good hotel and would happily stay here again. Edinburgh is a great city and the people are very friendly and you must visit the zoo.

It sounds like you had a great time here! I expect we will see you again when the pandas have a cub and you come back to visit the zoo. That may be a bit optimistic, but at least you know you'll be we'll looked after at the Holiday Inn Edinburgh whatever the reason for your visit.

Thanks for your review.
