The National Gallery houses a superb collection with excellent breadth of periods. The museum is easily toured and can be enjoyed even if the visitor only has a short time to dedicate to the visit.

I could have spent all day here. So many things to see. The building is split into sections and there are maps to guide you to particular areas that you are interested in. Well worth a look.

I like the scale--not so much to view so that it is overwhelming. And, in good part because it is free admission, it's nice to be able to return to concentrate on a specific part of the collection, and not to try to do all over several hours on one day.

Rembrandt, Raphael, Botticelli, Bellamy, Degas, Cezanne, Hals. Wow, all this and more on a cold December afternoon.

For a wonderful and gorgeous break from the crowds and hubbub of the city, why not take in the National Gallery? It's central, it's free (admission by donation) and has a beautiful, varied collection. It isn't too big either, which has its merits. We were lucky enough to rent a flat two minutes away and stopped in at the gallery most mornings to soak in a little at a time: such a luxury and a joy for those of us from small towns who don't have access to galleries like this one.
