“Very good city hotel”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

The hotel is situated at walking distance from the city centre. There are various bus lines that can also bring you to the centre. It's also a great place from which you can explore the surroundings.
Free limited parking is available in front of the hotel.

The staff is friendly and helpful.

The hotel is not so big which create a cosy atmosphere.
The room were nice, and the bathroom was huge and clean.
The only inconvenience we had was with the shower.
The shower is a walk-in shower what caused that the water didn't run away and ended up all over the bathroom floor.
Also the heating didn't work well.

Overall a great city hotel

Great quiet location. Friendly helpful staff. Large comfy clean room. Plenty of parking, stayed 3 nights, didn't need to move the car. 20 min walk into town. 10 mins to Arthurs seat and great local pub at the end of the street The salisbury arms. Superb breakfast with option to buy extra's. Over all we had a lovely stay and would recommend this B&B.

Thank you for your excellent review of the Salisbury Hotel.

We are always very happy to learn a guest has had a wonderful stay with us. The Hotel is located in the quiet residential suburb of Newington in the South Side of the City. A mere 20-minute stroll from the centre of town, the Hotel is far enough out so guests can relax in peace and quiet, but close enough so that they can gain quick and easy access to the attractions on offer.

Our friendly and helpful staff are on hand to make sure that our guests have everything that they need. No request is too big or too small; from restaurant reservations to tour information to recommendations for things to see and do, all you need do is ask.

All of our rooms offer guests a comfy, clean and tranquil environment for our guests to relax in. An excellent Continental Breakfast Buffet is inclusive of all our rates, but Cooked Breakfast items are also available to guests for a small additional charge.

Thank you once again for your great review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Edinburgh on your next visit.

Spacious family room, delicious breakfast, and excellent location for exploring Edinburgh by foot - no bus trips needed as the centre is just 20 minutes away. This proved an ideal base for our family to have an Edinburgh experience in excellent comfort. Friendly staff made us very welcome. Only annoyance was an eccentric bathroom with a shower that part-flooded the bathroom floor (although bathroom so big this was manageable). Would we stay again? For sure...

Great place for easy acess to Edinburgh city centre by bus or walk in 30 minutes. Continental breakfast was good. Only critisism was the shower was unable to maintain a stable temperature, scalding to cold randomly. Room was comfortable.

My husband and I stayed here while we were visiting Edinburgh for the week-end. We took a cab from the airport - but please be advised that they do have free parking in the lot right outside of the hotel. Nobody was at the reception when we arrived, but there was a note to ring the door bell - and when we did, a lovely woman (I cannot remember her name!!!) came straight away to check us in. We arrived earlier than check-in, and were not going to have any problems leaving our luggage and grabbing a bite to eat before coming back to check-in, but the nice receptionist ran up to our room to see if it was ready. It was, so we got to check-in a few hours before the check-in time. The receptionist was also very helpful telling us which local sites to check out and where the main tourist sections were, etc., etc. So, so friendly and helpful.

While there are rooms on the ground floor, there is no step free access to the hotel. You need to carry your luggage up the staircase - and even if you have a room on the ground floor, you need to get up a few stairs to the building from outside. This doesn't bother me, but if you're somebody in a wheelchair or have bad knees, be advised!

They offer a free breakfast - which comes with tea, coffee, toast, yogurts, jams, etc. but you can purchase additional items (such as eggs, traditional breakfast, cappuccino/latte) for extra. The menu for breakfast is on the table. I don't understand how some people on this site have complained about how that stuff is extra - can they not read the breakfast menu? What did put me off was that I wanted a cappuccino so while I was in the bathroom, 5 minutes to when the breakfast was closing, my husband tried ordering one for me and was told no! I mean, c'mon, make the cappuccino and then let me take it with me to the room to finish it. I couldn't believe it. It really put me off b/c I like having a coffee while I'm getting ready in the morning. Also, apparently they have room service from that restaurant downstairs where breakfast is served, so I don't see how it would have been a problem getting a cappuccino. It seriously takes less than a minute to make one.

Anyways... So the room... it is small, but not by European standards - Americans beware. The bedroom was comfortable, the wallpaper was awesome (I must be on a wallpaper kick these days), there was a screen TV with multiple channels (not someone who watches TV on holiday but sometimes people want to know this information!) and the room faced the street but it wasn't noisy at all.

The bathroom; however, was ridiculous. I am 5'4" and 110 pounds and let me say that I even struggled to fit in the bathroom when trying to use the toilet! I cannot imagine how someone heavy or tall could even use the toilet with the door closed. The shower was nice - but my husband said the times he had a shower, someone in the other rooms must've flushed the toilet or used the sink b/c the water would all of a sudden switch to extremely cold. I; however, did not experience that and upon our departure we didn't feel it necessary to mention it.

We did dine at the restaurant downstairs one evening. It is called Cafe Cassis. (This is where you go when you are served your breakfast), and guests at The Salisbury get a discount when dining there. It was convenient and the food was really, really good - but I'll make a separate post on them later. But if you're staying at the hotel and are looking for an early evening, dine there - it is really good.

As for the location - it is not in the city centre - which is something that I actually like. Be aware that it is either a short 20 minute walk to the centre OR alternatively you can take the bus. The bus stop is just at the end of the street and to the right. The location was quiet.

Overall, I enjoyed our stay at The Salisbury Hotel.

Room Tip: If you're small and have trouble carrying luggage up stairs, request a room on the ground floor...

Thank you for your excellent review of the Salisbury Hotel. It is always a pleasure to hear that our guests have had a fantastic experience with us.

The Salisbury Hotel is just a 20-minute walk from Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile, which boasts both Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle. The Hotel is also in the perfect location for easy access to Edinburgh University, the Pollock Halls, Arthur’s Seat, the Commonwealth Swimming Pool and many other attractions. Lothian Buses operate an excellent system with at least ten frequent services to and from the City Centre from the bus stop located just around the corner from the Hotel.

For guests arriving by car the Hotel does offer limited free parking facilities – 10 spaces for 18 rooms – allocated on a first come first served basis. We can not reserve spaces for guests although we very, very rarely have to turn anyone with a car away. We are happy that we can offer our guests this service as it is rare in Edinburgh, a city that is very busy and expensive to park in.

The Hotel houses the independently run Café Cassis, which offers guests an excellent menu with Gallic flair and friendly, knowledgeable staff. Room service is also available should guests want to eat in the comfort of their own rooms. Should guests wish to leave the Hotel and eat out in Newington there is a selection of excellent restaurants and bistros within a couple of minutes walking distance from the Hotel including Heller’s Kitchen (Scottish) and the Salisbury Arms (Scottish), Il Positano (Italian) and Voujon (Indian).

The rooms include all the mod cons that a guest would need away from home, including a Plasma Screen TV, a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board, an iPod docking station, and complimentary Wi-Fi and refreshments. All room rates are inclusive of a Continental Breakfast buffet which offers a great selection of items including pastries, cereals, meats, cheeses, fruit, toast, yoghurts, fruit juices, teas and coffees. Cooked items are also available for a small additional charge.

Thank you once again for your great review and we look forward to welcoming you back to our Hotel on your next visit to Edinburgh.
