Edinburgh is a premium price city, so staying at this hotel to the east of the city represents good value and it's just a short walk from Portobello for a pleasant walk along the promenade. The breakfast, included in the room cost, was excellent and served by pleasant staff. Clean throughout. En-suite recently refurbished, but the bedroom is rather jaded, spoiling an otherwise good stay.

Thank you for posting your comments regarding your stay. It is good to hear that you enjoyed your stay. With 95 Bedrooms it is a never ending process of upgrading and refurbishing. We refurbished 12 rooms in the spring and are currently finalising plans for another 22 rooms to be completely redecorated in early autumn. Hopefully you will find more up to date decor on your next visit.

Check in friendly and room clean and modern. View from window was poor but hey I not looking out. Last time I stayed could see the sea. Sat outside in the sun and had a few pints. nice and relaxing.
Food to room was good and tv was good size SONY on the wall.
bed hard but ok but pillows were hard. However I had a good nights sleep.
Check out speed. Easy to park and easy t find.

Thank you for your review of your stay. We have a range of pillows available from housekeeping , as it states in the room information folder. On your next visit you may want to ask for a more yielding pillow. Although from your comments the firmer pillows did not interfere with your sleep.

the room was small, no a/c, the floor had carpet, but the wood floor below creaked badly...........go thru a maze to get to the room due to many additions over the years......breakfast very good, very quiet though as you had to leave the window open...........short walk to the beach and found this by chance..........

The hotel was built in 1842 as a ‘gentleman’s country house’ which is not at all ‘old’ by Edinburgh standards.

This was my first time booking a Great Western Hotel and found myself wary of what it would be like that is until I arrived and stepped through the door and to my amazement found it to be well fantastic - great value for money actually I think my exact words were WOW! which I continued to repeat much to the annoyance of my mum. This hotel (for those of you who don't drive) is greatly situated with regular bus services and a train station a short walk away. The staff are really helpful and attentive and you get the instant feeling that they love there job and that the management have it all in hand. I found the bar, bistro and gym facilities to be brilliant and the rooms are above reproach, in fact so is the entire hotel. But, don't take my word for it as you don't know me from Adam, but book it for yourself and see, I promise you won't be disappointed. Big fan of this hotel.

Room Tip: I would recommend upgrading to a club room.

I've stayed here for 4 nights per week over the last 3 weeks while working in Edinburgh, the location is great, the holel is spotless with greata rooms, great bar, an excellent leisure club with gym, pool, steam room and pool with jaccuzi.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful on all my stays, in particulat Robert on reception who was very helpful with reaervations etc. Also Sheana who like Robert was very helpful.

Room Tip: Club rooms are spacious and decorated to the highest standard of hotels.
