This is a museum where you can learn a lot of interesting Scottish history. The galleries are arranged chronologically, so that the portraits tell a story. By the end of your visit, you will know a lot more about Scottish history and have had fun looking at the paintings. There is a gallery with floor to ceiling portraits of various people in tartans. It's great. The entry foyer and interior balcony of the Museum is a sight to be seen -- just glorious, like an old-style children's illustrated book about Scotland. The cafe is really good, too. Try the green pancakes(spinach, lime etc). and the lentil salad.

The quality expected of Art gallery's in the UK is without doubt rising year on year, and after a considerable period of closure the Scottish Portrait Gallery is back in fine fettle. A considerable improvement but keeping some of the old Victorian wonders. A newly installed cafe is worth the visit alone filled with artistic gallery favourites , good food and service as well. One cannot expect every new exhibition to be the best ever but with each visit we learn and enjoy a little more and return each year with renewed enthusiasm. Well done a lovely visit

The building is magnificant is are the permanent displays but the 'visiting' exhibitions made it for us. Edith Tudor Hart and the Comedians especially so.
