Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“Excellent audio tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014 via mobile

This is not cheap which is the only reason why I'm giving it 4/5.... it is really well done! The audio tour is great and the ruins in the garden are really beautiful...and I'm not a big ruins fan. Everyone that works there was quite friendly...and it is cool to be inside a palace that I see pictures of in the news. Overall I glad I paid to do it!

“The ruins are interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014

One of the stops on our 20 day British Isles tour. I'm not much of a history buff, but thought the views around the site were very interesting, especially the ruins. Not as impressive as other castle/fortress stops like Balmoral, Warwick, or Cardiff Castles, but still well-worth a visit.

“The Queen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014

The Queen had payed her annual visit so the palace was closed when we were there. We grabbed a view on the tour bus and this is definitely a place we will go and see - Her Majesty permitting.

“Full of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014 via mobile

The tour around Holyrood is great. The history within the building is fascinating. The self guided tour headsets are very good. The staff are all extremely helpful and really know their stuff when it comes to Scottish history.

On a nice day it is lovely to walk thru the gardens and the old abbey.

The cafe serves very nice food and is worth a visit.

The gallery tour on fashions was really interesting.

“Excellent Audio Guide”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2014 via mobile

This was my favorite site in Edinburgh. My advice is skip the castle and come here. The audio guide was excellent and provided background on the palace and information on Mary Queen of Scots. Loved the Great Hall and all the portraits near the stairway. The bed chamber and anterior room of Mary Queen of Scots were fantastic. Lots of personal items to see.
