Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

“Fascinating”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

The audio tour is included in the entrance fee and myself and my son (11 years) thought is was really interesting and informative starting with the intro from Prince Charles as you arrive in the forecourt. Loved the Mary Queen of Scots chambers and the winding private staircase to get there and all of the history associated with it. Weather was good so we also got to see the Abbey and toured the gardens. Good value trip.

“Living History....”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

well... Its impressive that I can actually visit a palace where royalty do actually still using it. I can close my eyes and imagine that the Queen do spend time here and she is still a living a person.

Don't be fool by it age when you hear the Queen still visit here, because this palace is a piece of art from 12th century.... :P

A great way to live up and learn living history , wonderful tour. The audio tour too quite impressive, and detail too , very interesting place to visit.

“Enjoyed the audio tour”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

As this is still a working palace I though the Audio Tour was a great way to get in the information that was interested for us tourists without ruining the rooms for the Queen when she actually uses them! Definitely do the audio tour!

“Hauntingingly Fabulous”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

I am a lover of history. In particular, I have always read anything available on Mary Queen of Scots. The Palace of Holyrood and its' Abbey, are greatly associated with Mary's short history as Queen of Scotland. So much drama in Mary's six year reign, occurred within these walls. I have visited Edinbugh a number of times, and I still must go through the Palace. The tiny supper room, where Rizzio was murdered and the blood stains on the floor in Mary's presence chamber speak of the violent history associated with Mary. Of course today, It is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth and many rooms are available to view. There is audio available, in order to listen and absorb the many facts from Holyroods conception to the present day.
