“Oh dear what a woeful cafe for service! Don't bother!!”
Reviewed August 30, 2012

Wait ages to get seated then told can't have a larger table for three that is free because we were a party of two and some imaginary trio MIGHT come in and need a table...the trio did not arrive in said Imaginarium and indeed one three table had two people at it...I'm sorry but what kind of moronic management mind set makes up such BS nonsense!?! And then enforced by an unwelcoming almost sneering staff who obviously thInk they're superior or artists being tortured with a real job! Get real,we would have bought a full lunch instead I one coffee but after that idiocy we are never to return. The gallery is lovely in exhibit terms but suffers from the same malaise in its hipster staff.

“good place to eat”
Reviewed August 18, 2012 via mobile

i like this place. I.ve been 3 or 4 times and found the staff friendly and helpful. The food is very tasty though if you have fussy children this might not be a good pick (my fussy son could only find a bowl of chips on the menu to suit him but this is entirely his own issue and no reflection on the choice available) there is an excellent selection of delicious cakes and good coffee too. It.s nice to watch the world go by at the window. The art shop is good and the gallery of interest to arty folk. They are open a bit later during festival time (7 i think with last food orders 6.30)

“cafe is a rip off, v. grumpy staff”
Reviewed July 11, 2012 via mobile

Recently took 2 friends visiting from overseas here for cake and tea at lunchtime. Stood for ages by the "wait here to be seated" sign only to be ignored by grumpy staff. It wasn't busy with lots of free tables. Eventually walked in to sit down before being quizzed by aggressive waitress about how much we would be spending. Told them we wanted tea and cake before being asked to leave cos we wouldn't be spending enough!!!!! They demand a £7 per head spend. Awful, AWFUL way to run a business. V. embarassing reflection of tourist-trap Edinburgh.

“Great Gallery Space”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

The Fruitmarket gallery is an accessible and enjoyable space located in the centre of Edinburgh. While the exhibitions may not always be to your taste the execution of them is always excellent. The space itself is small so it makes the task more manageable and it means you can go there and it not take up the whole day. There is always an accompanying filmed interview with the artist that adds a real sense of intimacy to the works. The gallery often holds talks too - both free and ticketed - that delve more deeply into each shows subject matter. A real plus as often you get to see the artist or academics who specialise in the selected area.

Also there is a rather enjoyable bookshop space at the entrance, It can be a bit much upon arrival but the selection of books is quite nice for a browse, and the staff don't mind if you linger in the seated area reading.

A drawback is the cafe though. It's overpriced for what you get and the service isn't enough to overcome it. I was there recently and ordered 2 lattes and 2 cakes all of which came to £11.60. The cakes themselves were £3.50 each! My boyfriend had a really gritty polenta cake and my lemon drizzle was way too sweet. The coffee is average and again pricey. The only redeeming factor is the big window is great to people watch - especially if by yourself.

In short this is a great gallery but head up the road into town for better refreshments.

“a small scale gallery with some big artists on exhibition”
Reviewed January 26, 2012

Shopping? Listed under shopping? This is a serious GALLERY folks, with real exhibitions. OK I'll relax. Cool. There is a shop and a cafe downstairs, so it's both commercial and art. And they do sell paintings from time to time. It's OK I'm calm now.

The building is tucked away on Market Street behind Waverley Station, and easily accessible either from Princes Street or from the Royal Mile. It's well worth a visit and there's almost always art to see - they have four exhibition rooms.

By all means buy your art nicknacks but please look round the artwork first. It may be British or American or European, but it'll be interesting and challenging.

Right opposite is the City Art Gallery. Combine the two.
