“A "real" castle experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 24, 2013

Edinburgh Castle is what most people remember while visiting Old Town, but with a little effort here was the castle to see. We took a bus about 3 miles out of the city then walked to the castle. Since many do not come out this way for a while we had the castle to ourselves just to roam and explore....I love that we could walk a couple of the outer walls....there was enought signs to keep you informed...I would suggest as we did to get the guide when paying for the castle....we spent an entire morning and loved it!

“one of a must visit in Scotland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2013

If you are looking for a quiet and great landscape for taking photograph or family visit, this castle is your best spot in Edinburgh.

One of the reasons the castle is not yet crowded by the tourists is because it's not on many tours. The castle is 1 hour by direct bus from the city centre.

Another thing we love is the great nature surrouding the castle, compared to the rural scene of the Edinburgh castle. We can freely view the inner castle without much restriction as the Edinburgh castle.

This is a real hidden gem in Scotland.

“Hidden gem”

If you're looking to get away from the "museum" atmosphere of say, Edinburgh Castle, this is the perfect spot. We chose to walk the couple miles from the city, around Arthur's Seat, and up the wooded hill to this castle. i have to say, after the hike, coming out into a beautiful field with the castle looming in the short distance was awe-inspiring to say the least. We toured the ruins (it is just that, empty ruins) for over two hours without seeing a single person except in the small gift shop where you buy tickets. The grounds are beautiful and haunted by the calls of pigeons and ravens. A must see if you're trying to get away from the more touristy areas in Edinburgh.

“Take the time to visit!”

We got the "Explore Scotland" pass. This was the first castle after Edinburgh Castle. We toured about 30 sites on the pass, and this still is one of my favorites and remains my daughter's favorite. It is breathtaking to see the remains, the views, the well maintained grounds, trees in the courtyard, and just overwhelmed that it is still standing after all these centuries. The stories that involve Mary Queen of Scots and James III made it even more special. If you plan to tour castles in Scotland, make sure this is one your list!

“Excellent Castle Ruins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2013

This is one of the best castle ruins we have seen in Scotland. We spent almost two hours exploring every inch of the castle. There were no crowds despite being just outside Edinburgh. In fact, for a time, our family were the only people on the castle grounds. This castle should be on your very short list. We liked it better than Edinburgh Castle as it is less touristy.
