Owner description: The castle of Craigmillar is one of the most perfectly preserved castles in Scotland. Even today, the castle retains the character of a medieval stronghold. Building began in the early 15th century, and over the next 250 years the castle became a comfortable residence surrounded by fine gardens and pastureland. The castles history is not only closely involved with the city of Edinburgh, but plays an important part in the story of Mary Queen of Scots who fled to Craigmillar Castle following the murder of Rizzio. It was in the castle where the plot was hatched to murder Marys husband, Lord Darnley. Built round an L-plan tower house of the early 15th Century, Craigmillar was much expanded in the 15th and 16th Centuries. It is a handsome ruin, including a range of private rooms linked to the hall of the old tower. Open all year. Winter closed Thurs and Fri.

“Must see for castle lovers!!”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Visited this castle with a friend and we both love castles. There are loads of information boards about the castle and there is lots to explore. We sat in one of the wee rooms and had a picnic.
Great day out and close to home. :-)

“The perfect place to play hide and seek (or have a picnic)”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

It was so great to explore this huge and well-preserved castle, even more so because we were completely alone! No other visitors!
PS While chosing what shoes to wear, keep in mind that there is A LOT of mud.

“An Edinburgh surprise.”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Bus 8 or 33 from central Edinburgh to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (35 mins) then follow footpath (not signposted) with steps going northwards, cut through when able then short walk up (not busy) Craigmillar Castle Road. Rather exposed so need a dry day (not a snowy one like me). Lots of staircases to explore up and down. No cafe but a drinks machine in the shop. Was given a number for the keypad to access the loo. Check opening times if visiting between November and March.

“Wedding at craigmillar castle ”
Reviewed March 18, 2013 via mobile

We had our wedding today at the Castle and it was an awesome place. It had a stunning atmosphere with a very nice Hall. For the photo shooting we had an excellent scenery. Everything was arranged including the candles and the red carpet. Beautifully place. It is just outside edinburgh and easy to reach by taxi or by bus.
