I visited Edinburgh over 20 years ago, and have a hazy recollection, of visiting the camera obscura, but the visibility wasn't very good, so I was charged a nominal amount to go to the top and admire what view was visible.
I'm assuming that the other attractions in the building have been added since.
On arrival we were sent straight to the top to see the camera obscura, which combines the view and knowledge of the guide. The views from the landing are stunning. We then browsed the other the other floors in descending order.
Some areas were quite busy, but it's all good fun, playing with optical illusions and the like.
Worth the money.

“A unique attraction”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

This is a unique attraction - educational, informative, fun and imaginative.
The staff were friendly, and there's plenty to do and see. Some of the exhibits and illusions are pretty amazing. Kids and adults alike can find lots to do.
Great views of Edinburgh from the tower.
It was busy due to the bank holiday weekend, but not excessively.
The Camera Obscura show is at pre-scheduled times, and unfortunately our allocated show was two hours away, so we missed this in the end as we had to see other things in Edinburgh, but I imagine that the shows are usually timed closer if it weren't for the busy day.
Overall, pretty cool!
