“Fun morning”
Reviewed June 1, 2009

As the rain poured, my teenage son and I were cozy in the Brass Rubbing Center. Excellently run by a friendly helpful woman who said she had been with the center for many years. The choices of rubbing possibilities were quite varied - something suitable for children all the way to the most experienced. We had a wonderful morning.

Thank ccmgrad

“Well worth a visit!”

As with several things in Edinburgh this is hidden away, right off the Royal Mile in an alleyway opposite the Museum of Childhood.

Theres a nice large selection of brasses (or rather reproductions of brasses) from the very small to the 6ft long ones. All at very reasonable prices, from £4 for the smallest to I think about £18+ for the bigger ones.
A brass rubbing will take you anywhere from half an hour to well over an hour, so you're not really going to be able to pop in and out. But it's a lovely place to take a break, chill out and do something you might have never done, or in my case not done since I was a child.

Very happy to help with any queries or problems and they'll show you how to do it. There is a lot of space with 5/6 tables so you could even go in as a group.

Most reccommended :)

“Brass rubbing centre was fascinating and fun”

A chance to feel your way into the past, make a work of art, take some time to reflect and give your arm a work-out. Trinity Apse is a quiet spot 20 yards off the busy Edinburgh HIgh Street. 10 minutes from the station and 2 minutes from the bus stop. I took 4 kids under 11 and we all had a great time. It was quiet, the staff helpful, the setting very pleasant and airy on a hot day. There are no original brasses there, but great reproductions in resin-brass. Take a rubbing and make a wonderful work of art to hang on the wall or give to a friend as unique and personal gift. Designs include some celtic knot patterns but the majority come from tombs in Britain, c1300-1600, the high point of this very British art-form. Special paper, metallic crayons and other supplies all provided.

The kids did the easier ones and I tackled some more challenging brasses, all of us with some success! An easy brass can be done in a few minutes. Give yourself an hour or two for the fancier designs. While I was there, a party of 25 American high school students came in, quietly got on with their chosen brasses, had some fun and went away after an hour satisfied with their experience and some cool souvenirs of the 'Old World'. No fee to go in and admire the brasses and some exceptional rubbings, but you pay for what you take out, ranging from £1.50 to £20 for the life-sized ones. On sale too, are some rubbings done by the pros, which are very reasonably priced, considering the skill and time required to do them.

Trinity Apse web-site seemed to suggest one could only come in a group, but this is not the case. Come one, come all for an easy yet rewarding experience at Trinity Apse!
