“Great guide, better than expected.”
Reviewed January 31, 2013 via mobile

After purchasing a groupon offer for the tour and reading some reviews i wasnt looking forward to the tour. However, i think we got lucky with the guide we got. The woman was great at telling the story and had lots of interesting things to say. There was a short walk involved in the tour and one very high step into the vaults but everyone should do this tour. Me and my boyfriend even stepped in the witches circle.

“A mixed bag”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

On our recent trip to Edinburgh we purchased the Edinburgh Pass which includes the Auld Reekie Tours as part of the upfront cost. We only had one day in Edinburgh, and wanting to make the best use of the Pass, we booked two tours with Auld Reekie: the Underground Tour and the Terror Tour.

The Undergound Tour that we went on in the afternoon was pretty good overall. Our guide was informative and added just the right amount of dramatic effect to spice up the tour. The tour certainly wasn’t scary but it was atmospheric. The Terror Tour was a different kettle of fish. The group was far too large to start with. If you were stuck towards the back of the group it was very difficult to see and even hear the guide. The large group size also took away even the remotest chance of finding the tour creepy. I think we were also unlucky with our guide on the Terror Tour. He was very quietly spoken and added no emotion to his tales. It was basically a flat performance. Some of the stories that were told on the Underground Tour were repeated on the Terror Tour (we were warned about this beforehand and had no problem with it) but were told in a less theatrical way. I would even go so far as to say the Terror Tour was boring!

We had booked on to another company’s Ghost Tour earlier in the evening and this was fantastic. I know that the quality of the guides will make a huge difference to your experience so it may be that our guide in the evening was just having an ‘off’ day. However, when we return to Edinburgh we will not be using Auld Reekie Tours again.
