Really enjoyed the stay at the hotel. John made us feel very welcome and recommended interesting places to visit. Clean and very large rooms. Very entertaining owner, should be a standup!

Positives:

Breakfast was good and hearty and included haggis for those of you looking to adventure into that realm. Breakfast room had some personality and felt quite authentically Scottish. Rooms and hallways had beautiful paintings.

Negatives:
Owner did not go out of his way to even bother being welcoming. Was disappointed for this to be my introduction to Scotland. He was miserable and the service was surly.

Rooms could use some TLC. It was clean enough, just musty, with peeling paint in the washrooms, curled up flooring, yucky carpeting (not sure why the Scots use carpet in such a climate???). In any case, we wanted to love our experience but were very very disappointed and would not recommend this hotel. All guests were treated the same when we stayed there, as unwelcome guests. You can find better B&B's in the area for the same price point.

Our stay at the hotel was very comfortable. The rooms were huge, we were really suprised. TV, DVD, shower/bath and breakfast included. Host John was a really decent bloke who would go out of his way to help. Short walk into town, about 20 mins.

  • Liked — Large Rooms / Well appointed
  • Disliked — 50 stairs to our room on the 3rd floor, no lift.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a room on the 1st floor

This is a really fantastic find. My friend and I paid 60GBP for our room for each night. It is well worth it.

The location is good. You have to walk a bit further than you might with other hotels, but very little more - mere minutes. The price and everything else about this hotel makes up for that. The owner, John, is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are comfortable and well accommodated. The hotel itself is quite nice and you even get a nice breakfast served in a downstairs dining room each morning - eggs, baked beans, bacon, toast, juice, etc.

I will definitely stay there again when I return to Edinburgh.

It's hard to beat the Clan Campbell Hotel for service, comfort and location, not to mention price. The hotel is conveniently located on Brunswick Street, a quiet side street just off London Road near Edinburgh's shopping center.

The rooms are spacious, clean and neat with a lot of character. They include a television and tea service set, along with biscuits. The breakfasts are tasty and very generous, with lots of coffee and tea on hand, served by John, the hotel owner. The lobby/bar area is inviting for singles, couples and families. And if you're lucky, John will treat you to a piano tune or two.

No matter what you're interested in --- sightseeing, theater, movies, shopping --- it's all only 10-15 minutes' walk from the hotel. There are bus stops just five minutes' walk away to get you to the Royal Mile if you don't want to make the uphill trek to that part of the city on foot. But the Royal Mile is also doable on foot from the hotel.

There's plenty of tourist information at the hotel, as well as a nice selection of paperback books of all kinds available to guests. And if you have any questions about city history, currency exchange or how to get about the city, John has the answers.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a convenient, charming and friendly place to stay.

Haste ye back! On a recent visit to Edinburgh the hotel we had aranged had overbooked and we were left without accomodation. The tourist board gave us the name of a number of options one of which was the Clan Campbell in Brunswick Srtreet a 10 min. walk from Princess Street.
The welcome was warm and friendly the rooms spacious with fresh cotton sheets, plenty of hot water and towels.
Large portions for of English breakfast or a choice of continental and no end of coffee.
The price we paid for our family room could not have been bettered.
For a family we would highly recommend it.

This is our 3rd stay at Clan Campbell Hotel in the last few years and hopefully there will be many more to come. We love our room (the 1st floor triple) with super high ceilings, a large window overlooking the interior garden, a spotless bathroom with great water pressure. John (the owner) is invariably very hospitable and makes it a pleasure to hang out in the lounge, watching TV, drinking and socialising with other travelers.

The breakfast is generous and well prepared, the check-out policy very lenient (11 am is the latest I was ever able to check out from a B&B in UK), the location convenient and the price is easy on the wallet. The hotel is located on Brunswuick St, not far from London Rd and Leith Walk intersection. It is about a 15 minute walk to the beginning of the Princes St and Waverley Station, not far from St. Andrews Square (bus connections to the rest of Scotland). We mostly walked to Princes St and Holyrood on our previous trips, this time we made extensive use of frequent buses (just a few stops).

Overall, Clan Campbell is a great value for money, with well appointed rooms, friendly service, good location and excellent hospitality. We hope to return in 2006.
