You can't sleep due to the street noise (people shouting) and can't breath during the night as too many people in one dorm.
Extremely dirty. Only 2 showers and 2 toilets.
Bed and bedlinen are filthy and smelly.
No wifi in the dorms.
Kitchen is freezing and very dirty especially the fridges (2 very small ones).
Avoid at all cost!
Should take better care of their customers and ask themselves if they would live in such filthy conditions. Shameless.

Myself & 3 friends had booked in to stay here for the weekend, After what felt like a decade of walking up the hill to get to it from the bus station, We got to our rooms which for 4 girls all trying to get dressed for a night out in was like a tin of sardines. I really was not impressed with the size of the room. You really could not swing a cat in it.
And i didn't find them very clean either to be honest, The room was stifling and we were not even able to open a window because it was stuck shut.
To be honest this is one of the worst hostels i have ever stayed in and we have been to quite a few.

The thing that struck me the most about this place, after climbing the don't-blink-you'll-miss-it stairs, was how awesome the staff were! None of them were Scottish of course, but they were far more helpful and fun than any other hostel stuff I had encountered so far. They yapped with me for ages when I arrived to tell me about things to do and answer all my questions.

The common areas were cozy to say the least, but I didn't really spend any time lounging around the hostel - some people never seemed to leave! They are part of the same group who owns a hostel across the road, and if you don't have your own internet device, you can go over there to use their computer. You can also show your hostel card to get a discount at a pub on the same block.

As the name implies, they are right on the Royal Mile, so a great spot to be if you want to explore old town. It is right in the middle between the castle on one side, and Holyrood on the other - utterly perfect. And even though my room was on the front of the hostel, facing the street, I didn't find it ridiculously noisy. I had a similar room in Cardiff and it was like being in a war/party zone!
The dorm I was in was unisex, which was all right. It was very spacious and had lockers. The beds were fine - a little unstable so if you or your bunkmate moved, the other knew about it pretty quick. The bathrooms were a bit cramped and just be aware that the step out of the shower is REALLY TALL and SLIPPERY. I nearly fell on my face coming out of it.
The only other kind of lame thing is that their reception actually closes at night! So if you are out super late, or checking out early, you have to go to the aforementioned sister hostel across the street to get them to let you in or check you out.

The best thing about the hostel is obviously the location, which is on Royal Mile, in the heart of the city centre, with Princes Street and the major transport links by bus and train within close proximity. From its tiny entrance, you would be firgiven for ot even noticing it was a hostel. It is a stone's throw away from The Museum of Childhood, which is on the opposite side.

I stayed for 2 nights and paid £13 a night, which is excellent value. I shared a dorm with a few others, although if the dorm had been full there would have been 8 of us (4 bunks). Linen is changed once a week and the room has lockers. Rooms are clean, but the temperature varies. On the first night the temperature was warm, but on my 2nd night i found it very cold, so used an additional duvet. The staff are not only extremely friendly, but extremely helpful aswell, especially when I was asking directions and other questions about the local area. This made me feel very welcome and the man at reception (Greg?) should be complemented for his excellent customer service skills and general pleasant treatment.

The lounge is very small, but it has a fire and some couches, so is great for relaxing with a tea and book. Ironically the place where you would expect people to socialise is usually full of people glued to their laptops, due to the free wifi. There are a selection of a few dozen various books, but nothing special.

The self catering kitchen is better for socialising. There are 2 fridges and you can use a plastic box with your name on it for your non perishable groceries. I would recommend guests use the local Lidl, as it is the cheapest supermarket in the area and will sell everything you need. Breakfast is a selection of juices, cereals and toast with different spreads for £2 if you wish or you can just eat your own stuff. Tea, coffee and milk are always provided. There is also a kettle, cooker and microwave you can make use of aswell as cutlery, plates, glasses/mugs and various pots. Towels are available for hire at 20p. The hostel is open apart from between 3-6am, but if you are out between these hostel., you can make use of the High Street Hostel, which is literally across the road and is the sister hostel.

There are 2 male toilets and 2 showers. Toilet areas are kept very clean, as are showers. Showers are fine and there is hot water readily available. My only complaint was that due to the location of the hostel it is generally quite noisy at night, especially on a Friday and Saturday night. This can lead to being awoken during your sleep (in my case by a man singing sectarian songs at the top of his lungs). There is also noise coming from the bars which are under the hostel. Both of these are usually very busy and play live music into the early hours. So bring a pair of ear plugs and you should be ok as I imagine that would block out the noise somewhat. If it wasn't for this, I would've gave it 5 stars, as it is perfect in every other way.

Not only would I return to the same hostel (with earplugs), but I would definitely recommend it for those on a budget, or if you are only staying upto a few nights, then it is ideal, especially because of its convenient location, price and friendliness.

Room Tip: bring earplugs.
