I stayed over Hogmanay and was very impressed!! It's just a short walk to the main street and the rooms were very clean. Breakfast was limited but very sufficient :) I had left something in the room and the staff very promptly posted it to me - no questions asked!!! I would definitely stay here again!!

Room Tip: We had a twin room and we were very comfortable.

This was my third stay here this year - twice in the summer with my wife and two children and once with just my daughter. The rooms are modern, clean and quiet. We never heard noise travel between rooms, even in the height of summer when it was very busy. The staff are very accommodating and helpful. We ate breakfast on two occasions, and each time it was plentiful. The kitchen facilities were clean and spacious. Princes Street is a 10 minute walk and there is a bus stop across the road with multiple buses going to the city centre.

Great hostel, clean rooms, comfortable common areas and quite central. Rooms were well heated and everything seemed new! Breakfast was expensive but most hostels don't include breakfast anyways. Towels were cheap to buy and lockers in the lobby proved really useful and were not too expensive for the day.

Room Tip: 8 bed shared room and 1 bathroom and seperate toilet might be a bit too small unless you're a gr...

Had been here for a 7 day stay with my uni. A wonderful place located bang in the heart of Edinburgh. Welcoming staff and well furnished rooms. Edinburgh Central is every thing a back packer would want, low on the price, high on delivery. A must for all visiting Scotland

Room Tip: book in advance and if your an avid backpacker , i would advice you have a membership card. It gives...

A fairly standard hostel at a good price--we stayed three nights for about 57 pounds each, without breakfast and including the extra two pound per night charge for not being Scottish Youth Hostel members.
Rooms are clean, bedding supplied, and towels available at reception for two pounds. Everything looks to be very clean and well-kept. There were 4 lockers (bring your own locks) in our six-person room.
We didn't eat at the cafe ever, but we did get tea/coffee a few times and it was delicious, no complaints there. Without having tried it, I'd say skip the hostel breakfast, because there are so many nice bakeries and cafes nearby. We also picked up pastries for less than a pound from Tescos twice instead of getting a full breakfast, and that was well worth the walk over. We spent some time in the lobby, which is nicely set up for having some drinks or just getting started with your day. We looked into the self-service kitchen but never used it--it seemed to be pretty nice with a lot of pots/pans/general equipment provided.
Overall, happy with the service we received at this standard hostel. It lived up to our expectations. Our only complaint was that there wasn't free wifi (a pound for an hour, I believe), which is understandable, but to be fair, it is becoming a norm in most accommodations. (If you need it, rather than paying, just walk over to the nearby Starbucks, where it's free.)
Location-wise, it's pretty good--just a short 15 minute walk from the center of Edinburgh. The area is fairly well-lit and easy to get around in, and there were a fair amount of good pubs around. We ate at the Playhouse (by the royal theatre) our first night and at an Italian place the second and were not disappointed. There are also quite a few nice restaurants in the nearby shopping center, and a Starbucks conveniently located on the walk to the city center.
If you're coming from Waverly Rail Station, I'd definitely grab a cab over, especially if you arrive at night like we did. It's not far from the station, but if it's your first time in Edinburgh, it can be a little disorienting trying to navigate down Leigh Street with your luggage. Our cab was eight pounds (we walked back to the station when we left, so we saved money there) and we all agreed it was worth the peace of mind.

Being veterans to staying at SYHA properties throughout Scotland we have become accustomed to expecting a high level of quality and service from SYHA and we were certainly not disapointed with Edinburgh Central.

The location to the Elder street bus station is perfect and only a few minutes walk up the road, the Omni centre and Vue cinema as well as a host of bars, resturants and take away joints are adjacent to the property meaning that you are never far from somewhere to eat should you find yourself on the hunt for a meal and the hostel also has very reasonable priced lockers at only 20p per hour which we took full advantage of.

The staff were friendly, the hostel was spotlessly clean and quiet and the room (twin room) was very spacious and well equipped.

The location is perfect as its only a 10 minute walk to Princes street and Waverley station and the area around the hostel is safe as we walked around it at all hours of the day/night and never experienced any problems at all.

We have already arranged a few more trips to Edinburgh and have selected this hostel as our accomodation and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Tips:

Make full use of the lockers in the hostel if you arrive before your check in time or check out early and what to store your bags as its very cheap at only 20p per hour which is a fraction of the extortionate prices that the Elder street bus station and Waverley station locker facilities charge.
