“Very run down...”
Reviewed August 21, 2007

Fairly convenient to the main attractions of Edinburgh but that's about all that is good about the hotel. The amount that they charge they should be updating the hotel, the paint, wallpaper, carpets and bedding all need to be replaced. The breakfast was good but the time it's available (8-9am) is not convenient enough so we only went once. We needed to catch a 7am train when leaving so we put in a wake-up call for 6am, which was confirmed by the desk, but we never got the call in the morning. Lucky we woke up ourselves. Definitely wouldn't stay here again.

Okay, so the Ritz it ain't!! This hotel is a relatively inexpensive option close to the city-centre but is a little rough around the edges. There is a move to improve things with new bathrooms, a beautiful garden and tremendously helpful staff.
It is clean, comfortable and great value outside peak times.
Breakfast is good too. I feel other reviewers were unduely harsh probably because their expectations were unrealistic.
Overall faded grandeur but on the up!
