Coming to Edinburgh to take part in the marathon, we needed somewhere not too far from the start at Carlton Hill and with a bath to relax in after the event!

After searching through details of many extremely expensive hotels in Edinburgh, we came across the Claremont which seemed to have everything we needed but at a very reasonable price.

The hotel is about a mile north of Princes Street, and there are many restaurants, cafes and interesting shops along the route, not to mention a handy Tesco just around the corner.

We were able to check in as soon as we arrived, which was about 11am. Our room was large and sunny with two single beds and a double (two more singles put together), a large corner bath with shower, and a great view over the rooftops towards the National Monument on Carlton Hill.

There wasn’t much extra furniture (might have liked a small table), but it was cosy and perfectly OK for our needs. Everywhere was clean and tidy, although a little “worn at the edges”.

The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, although the reception area wasn’t itself very welcoming – there was just a small reception counter always shuttered closed (although someone was never far away …just needed to ring the bell).

Not a good hotel for people who don’t like stairs as there’s no lift, but that didn’t bother us (except maybe after the marathon!). The big winding staircase up the centre of the building also meant that sound travelled well, so if anyone was chatting late at night you could hear them quite loudly in the room.

The large restaurant was a couple of flights of stairs below street level, and for breakfast there was a (surprisingly) good range of cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurts, pancakes, etc. before the large cooked breakfast with plenty of tea, coffee and toast.

So all in all we enjoyed our stay and were very pleased with the hotel. It was very good value for money, not too far from the city centre, and with great staff …just showing its age a little.

we found this hotel after looking around after leaving a dreadful hostel. at 28 pounds each, it was only 6 pounds per person more than a hostel and for this we had a luxurious and large room, a private bathroom, a television and a wonderful breakfast. this 6 pounds extra was a very good investment! The staff were friendly and helpful, and the owner even let us check into our room at 9am for no extra cost. the only complaint i can think of is the coffee at breakfast was not very nice, and it was a good walk out of the city centre (the roal mile). we still managed the walking fine but we are quite young and fit, and it might not be attainable for everyone. im sure there is a bus that goes in though.

We drove into Edinburgh without a hotel reservation. One of our travel books listed the Claremont Hotel. It was easy to find and is located on a quiet tree-lined street about 4 blocks off Princes Street in the Broughton/Calton Hill area. We were given the last available room (of about 20 rooms total). It was huge (easily 500 sq feet) and had one king bed and 3 twins. We only needed the king but it would be a great room for a family. There were also a couple of chairs, a wardrobe, desk, and television. The en-suite was small with a large shower. Breakfast is included and served in a large dining room on one of the lower levels. There is also a bar on the premises that serves until 11. A big plus for us was the free parking in the back of the hotel.

The hotel is two adjoining rowhouses and the owner/manager lives in a flat in one of the buildings. As these were built as homes, the floors creak a bit and you can hear more than in a traditional hotel. If a little noise disturbs you, this is not the place for you.

They charge based on the number of occupants and at only £28 per person with breakfast in a great location, it is a great deal. I would stay here again.
