“Nice hotel”
Reviewed June 27, 2014 via mobile

Good location and decent room except that it has two twin beds shoved together. Never understand why euro hotels don't catch up to the rest of the world and have king or queen beds for couples. Tired of my feet hanging over the end of the bed as well. Real size beds for real people please Breakfast was good nice staff

I always look forward to staying at this hotel. The welcome, staff, rooms and food are excellent. This is probably due to the superb hands on management and their ability to keep well trained staff some of whom have been with the hotel for 8 or 9 nine years which is unusual in the hospitality sector. The freshly cooked breakfasts are a real treat and served by happy staff and dinner was really delicious, their chef really knows how to tempt the palate. I stay here every year with a regular group and their stay is always the best in their tour of the country. When we get to our London hotel they always say 'oh I wish we were back in Edinburgh'.I also stay here for personal use as the hotel is in a great location if you are doing anything in the city. I cannot praise this hotel enough for their standards of care to visitors.Well done David and your excellent hotel team.

Our family of five stayed in two rooms for two nights in this hotel. It is better than average but not really "very good". The staff members were really helpful and the rooms were relatively clean. The beds were comfortable, but the duvets were too small for two people sharing. We ended up on the first floor in the disabled rooms for some reason so it felt more like staying in a hospital than a hotel. This feeling was underscored by all the historic photos on the walls showing that this property was formerly a maternity ward. The traditional Scottish breakfast was a little too traditional for my taste and the continental buffet did not really have much to make up for it. The hotel was about a 15 minute walk from the castle/Royal Mile area. It wasn't inconvenient but felt a little out of the way. The easiest way to the hotel from the airport is by taxi. This was not expensive and thankfully the taxis in the UK have room for five. This is a fine place to stay for a short visit, however I would like to try someplace else if I were to go back to Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Avoid the first floor.

We stayed here right after staying in London, and our room was easily double the size. Everything was clean and well kept, but the hotel could use a spruce up of the common areas. Don't let that stop you though, this is a nice property. It's just a few blocks form a market, and a few more to the grass market, with a whole lot of pubs. You can walk to Edinburgh Castle (highly recommended!) the Royal Mile, and the Gallery.

The best part of the hotel is the breakfast- excellent food and fresh espresso! The bar also has a dram of the month for 2.50- cheapest whisky in the city.

Dear markafeit,

Thank you for your kind comments having stayed with us last month. It was great to read that you loved breakfast each morning and also tried the malt of the month offer we have in the hotel. It was also very helpful of you to point out how well situated our hotel is for the Castle and the Royal Mile: we are very fortunate with how well positioned we are for all the local attractions in Edinburgh and we are also only a 7 minute walk to the EICC and a 15 minute walk to Princes Street.

I hope you enjoyed the rest of your travels in Scotland!

Kind regards,

We've stayed here a couple of times - 2 adults, two kids and asked for the family room, which has a separate alcove (almost like 2 separate rooms). We booked a City hotel deal that included breakfast; and one time had the 1/2 board option (breakfast and dinner). Food was copious and good; kids could not finish their breakfast or set menu dinner. Quite good meals. As we returned, the staff remembered us and were very friendly and quite helpful. We were made to feel welcomed and taken care of. Limited parking at the hotel (off the road) but also on the road parking (not paying if you are overnight and leave before 8 am in the morning). Great location for shopping, touring, eating - lots close by and walking distance. Good local bus service as well. Highly recommended - we will return.

Room Tip: Ask for family room with the alcove. Very comfortable.

Edinburgh City Hotel is my 'go-to' hotel for the Six Nations - great location in the Grassmarket and excellent value for money. The rooms are clean, bright and spacious and the staff are only too happy to help with any questions with great advice on check in on places in the area to visit.

So good I'm already booked to return next year!

Stayed here when in Edinburgh for a dismal England v Scotland rugby match at Murrayfield. Hotel was the only one in Edinburgh with sensible pricing that hadn't been over inflated to rip off rugby fans - room was very nice and bar was a good laugh. Parking would have been an issue but managed to get the sole disabled space as travelling with my father. Location is ok, although would have preferred a more central location as we were eating and drinking in Edinburgh centre, but for the money paid it was fine.

Dear Jim S,

Thank you for sharing your feedback having stayed with us over the 6 nation’s rugby this year. It was great to read that you had an enjoyable stay with us even though the rugby was a bit of a let down in terms of Scotland’s performance. It was also very pleasing to read that you felt you received value for money during such a busy weekend in Edinburgh: we conduct a lot of market research each day to make sure we are priced correctly whilst trying to offer value for the product we present to our guests.

Hopefully the ten minute walk to Princes Street doesn’t put you off booking with us again next year and we can have the pleasure of welcoming you back!
