“Our stay”
Reviewed May 30, 2012

Had a fantastic stay in march for a last minute trip away. The Hotel and staff were very accomodating especially a young lady called Claire who when finding out it was my birthday , she moved us to a larger room and on the quiet side , We actually ate in the restauraunt although the menu was not vast the food was lovely , i do think they could vary it a little , however the breakfast was of plenty . We have since been back to Edinburgh however we did not stay at The Edinburgh City which was dissapointing as they were fully booked up , however we will definately return .

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the road

Stayed here for the long weekend at the beginning of May. Very friendly staff and very clean hotel. Nice breakfast. Room size fine and bed comfortable. Nice and quiet but we were at the back - not sure how noisy it would be on the road at the front. Location excellent for reaching all central sites on foot. It is also conveniently on the bus route which runs from the airport to the Royal Yacht - get this local bus rather than the airport one as it is cheaper and stops almost outside the hotel so minimal walking with luggage.

Room Tip: Rooms probably quieter at the back

We searched the internet and chose the Edinburgh City because of its location, within walking distance of the city centre, and because it was a small chain Hotel. Before arriving we phoned the Hotel and spoke to Claire and asked for a quiet large room. The room was much better than we had expected and we also had our own lounge! Everything about the room was perfect. We were able to open the windows and control the excellent heating system, and get a good nights sleep because it was so quiet. The hotel had been completely refurbished and everthing was new, carpets, beds, furniture, curtains etc. We asked for extra pillows and a blanket, and this was in our room on our return in the evening. Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked (we were always first in at 7 a.m,) and we received excellent service from Aga the waitress. The hotel was very clean and all the staff extremely helpful. One receptionist searched the internet for us to find a place to visit by the sea. This is a small intimate hotel that is 3 star but 5 star in our opinion. We would highly recommend this hotel, which is obviously well managed, and we would definitely come again.

Room Tip: Ring the hotel before your stay and tell them what you want.

We spent some time looking for a place to stay for a 3 night stay over this last weekend, nearly 3 months in advance, could not find anything under £100 per night till we found the Edinburgh City Hotel for £80 per night including breakfast.. booked and paid in advance.
The Hotel is in a decent location, on the south side of the city, not far from Grassmarket.. Upon check in, hotel reception was friendly & welcoming, our room was on the top floor, nicely made out with a wardrobe & desk. But just as well I like my fiance, because it was the smallest double room I'd seen since I travelled in Thailand, not helped either the sloping ceiling of the roof, which on my side of the bed was hard to avoid. Well at least the bed was how we liked it- hard.. So we slept well.. and the bathroom was fine, clean & nicely tiled.
Breakfast the next morning was intresting, we sat down as instructed, but no staff members seemed to notice us, finally we helped ourselves to juice & cereal before finally we managed to order our cooked breakfasts, my fiance went for poached eggs, myself for scrambled.. It didn't take too long, and looked ok.. but are poached eggs meant to be cooked through? the baked beans were juice less and dry, and the sausages tasted of nothing, just a Lidl superbuy.. the mushrooms tasted very oily which didn't make you want to eat them... To sum breakfast up- even though it was included in our room rate, did we try it a 2nd & 3rd morning?
No chance. We went to a great cafe down the road.
The room service staff also missed us out on our first whole day there, even though we put out the 'Please service room tag'.
On reflection I think I'm been very fair giving a 3/5, mainly because of the rate we got & the location... we'll just go stay somewhere else next time!

Room Tip: Ask not to be on the top floor

Dear Peterminier_75,

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your stay last weekend. It was pleasing to read that there was a lot regarding your stay which you enjoyed, including the location, price, welcome on arrival and décor of the hotel. I would like to apologise, however, for the disappointment you experienced at breakfast on your first morning. Let me assure you this is not a comment which we usually receive. I have spoken with the team members that were working that day and also the team as a whole so that we can use your feedback to improve upon the service we already offer at breakfast.

Thank you again for your balanced comments.

Kind regards,

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Edinburgh City Hotel for one night in May (Saturday). We were very pleased with the location, the hotel is close to the Royal Mile & Grassmarket, we enjoyed walking through both of these places to get to Princes Street. There are other hotels closer to the centre on Edinburgh but the streets they were on were noisy and bust when we walked through them on the evening. Marianne (I think?) on reception was extremely helpful and friendly, despite finishing at 11pm and being back in bright and early the following day she was always in high spirits and nothing was too much to ask.

Our room was lovely and modern, if a little small, but perfect for one night and the small amount of time we spent in our room (lets face it you don't go to Edinburgh to sit in a hotel room). There was a large digital tv, good sized bed, tea tray, toiletries, towels, hairdryer and much more. Room was spotless.

We did feel the room was quite expensive baring in mind we didn't get breakfast or an evening meal included.

Would definitely reccomend Bella Italia for lunch or an evening meal, service is excellent and food is first class.

Staff was very friendly. The TV in our room wasn't working and they went out of their way to make sure it was fixed quickly. There was also no problem getting an extra blanket for our room. Our room was on the fourth floor over looking a busy street, but noise was not an issue. The location is very good and only a short walk to the castle. The was not sparkling clean, but was adequate.
