Reviewed April 30, 2013

Iv just returned from a short trip away doing business and stayed in what can only be described as a fantastic, charming and all round delightful place to stay. Our room was spotless, the rainfall styled showers were a great wake up in the mornings and the bed was most comfortable. Breakfast was a joy the following morning! The bar in the hotel was in the process of getting a re-fit, though this did not effect our stay at all.

The staff were amongst some of the most helpful i have ever met, and it is certainly a place i will visit again - and next time it will be for longer!!! It was a pleasure to find this wonderful little place and id recommend it to anyone!

Fantastic hotel, fantastic location, amazing rooms with friendly and helpful staff. Can not recommend this hotel enough. Prior to booking I did my research via Trip advisor then found a deal on line. It was my cousins 50th birthday celebrations and she had never been to Edinburgh. The hotel is on the Royal mile and a 5 min walk from Waverley Station. In the evening we ate and danced till 2pm at Le Monde (a 5/10 min walk away). In the morning we had a delicious Scottish breakfast for just over £7 which set us up for the rest of the day.
The beds are comfortable and spacious, the showers are gorgeous with ambient lights that change as u wash...all fittings are Porcelanosa. Iron and ironing board in room, ghd straighteners (fab touch), fashion magazines, safe, tea making facilities, mini bar with fridge, plenty of storage places for cases, bags, lots of hanger and hanging space for clothes, iPod docking station connected to the bedroom and bathroom, HD free view tv....I could go on. 9 of us stayed it this boutique hotel and everyone was impressed with the rooms, the food, the service, the location and the staff. Now all I need is another excuse to book.

We arrived by train from London and I took us to Waverly Bridge rather than Waverley stairs. Of course this meant a long trek dragging large suitcases (plus got lost) up the hill, so by the time we reached the hotel we were obviously looking a bit jaded. (we are in our 60's). We knew from TA that the reception was at the back of the bar, didn't create a problem for us. The check-in guy had a bit of a problem with the computer system initially, but eventually it came up and he said that our booked room was on the top floor and there was no lift. He obviously took into account our age, our puffing etc and changed our room to one on the first floor on the Royal Mile. (My husband suggested that perhaps he didn't want to find 2 dead people on the stairs!). Whilst he was checking with housekeeping that this room was ready we were offered a complimentary pint (which was most welcome). We were then taken to our room, our luggage brought up and we were most impressed. The bed was a beautiful sleep, the rainfall shower worked a treat (just like home), the crockery etc in the room of the highest standard.
The tea and coffee tray was well presented. Toiletries were of a high standard. Our room was very clean, and very little noise from outside. But in the middle of any city one does expect a little noise.
We did have our dinner in the pub (as it was snowing and unbelievably cold outside so we didn't venture out), and found the meals to be of the usual pub standard. Average.
We would definately stay here again, but would ensure that we had a room on the first floor, as I do think the steepness of the stairs for those of a certain age may be a little too challenging. Our thanks went out to the check-in guy in changing our booking. We probably would have died on the stairs.

Room Tip: Make sure that you can handle steep stairs if you book higher than the first floor

We stayed here for 3 nights in early April with a couple of friends to attend a wedding. The remainder of our party were at the Radisson Blue, virtually next door.
The virtual tour was deceptive. Certainly, the rooms were well finished and the bed was very comfortable, but not all bedrooms have a full bathroom ensuite. Although we had a front room onto the Royal Mile, there was no sound from passing traffic and/or late-night revellers.
My biggest disappointment was the access to the hotel, through a busy public bar. "Reception" was a serving hatch at the rear of the bar and there was no lounge area for residents. If you wanted breakfast etc there was no separate dining room - you just squeezed in beside anyone else either eating or drinking. Worst of all, was the neon "Vacancies" sign over the front door, which apparently never goes out, even when the hotel if fully booked.
The staff are friendly and helpful, but our room was not cleaned properly when we arrived and there was even broken glass on the floor under the radiator, crumbs under the bed and a dental floss stick in the bathroom.
Considering that we paid £367 for a 3 night stay, it was certainly over-priced. I think it should be described as a bar with rooms, rather than a hotel. As mentioned previously, the rest of our party were at the Radisson and we were able to meet up there for drinks etc. - the contrast in facilities was much superior, including a leisure section, and for only £10 per night more than we had paid. I know which hotel I would choose the next time - perhaps they are pitching for a much younger market. On the plus side, the location is excellent with lots of bars and restaurants nearby and it is only a short-ish stroll down to Princes Street.

Room Tip: front rooms have better outlook and request a bathroom if you prefer to soak.

Hi Hazel J,
Thanks you for taking the time to write this review. It’s always good to see what our guests feel is working well at the hotel and what we need to tweak to provide a better experience. I’m happy to confirm we have got a date now for the bar and public areas to be fully refurbished, this will bring the standard of the hotel to a very different level Hazel and the neon sign will be removed.

Touching on the other points you mentioned, the whole team will review your comments at our next hotel meeting to make sure we can avoid such issues going forward. It would be great for you to come back and see the hotel once our full refurbishment is complete as we really are trying to create something special in our new venture. Thanks again for your time hazel, take care.

I stayed at Bank Hotel last weekend with my wife on a two night trip to Edinburgh. The hotel is very handy for the train station and local tourist spots. The first floor has quite a lively bar where food is served.

We purposely requested a quiet room which turned out to be on the top floor, far from the bar downstairs, so we didn't get any of the noise. The room was gorgeous, very modern and clean with plenty of mod cons. The only down side was the trek up the stairs. This was fine for us but for anyone who struggles with climbing flights of stairs it might not be the best, and there is no elevator.

The center of Edinburgh is busy with traffic and this could be heard throughout the night. I suspect this might be the case with most hotels in the area. It might be wise to take earplugs if you are a light sleeper (like me).

Service at the Bank is slow ...painfully slow. My wife and I struggled to get someone to check us in which was annoying after a few hours of traveling. After waiting at the reception window of the bar for ten minutes we both had to really try to get anybody's attention. In fairness the bar was busy with only one member of staff but this is not great for a first impression and really should be addressed in my opinion. It wasn't a huge issue, just a bit unusual.

Breakfast was equally strange - we had breakfast in the hotel on both mornings of our stay and were equally baffled on both occasions. There was a table with juice and cereals but the juice was empty and we had to ask for it to be refilled both mornings. There was a selection of jam and butter on the tables but no-one brought or even asked us if we wanted toast. There was no option for toast on the menu so we just assumed it would be brought to us (like at every other hotel I've ever stayed at). I can say that the food was good. If you haven't tried French toast with bacon and maple syrup then you really should. Divine.

We did have some small issues but i would consider another stay. Maybe management should look at these issues as they aren't difficult to sort. The Bank Hotel would be excellent if it wasn't for the niggling problems with service.

Room Tip: I think we had room 9, on the top floor. It was very nice with no noise from other rooms. We had a d...

Stayed at this hotel for two nights in March and wow what a find. The room are immaculate. Very contemporary. Bathroom and toilet were separate. bathroom had full size bath and rainfall shower, both great. Bathrobes and slippers were a nice touch. Bed really comfortable. Ipod station and speakers in both bedroom and bathroom ceilings. They have got everything just right , even down to the coffee cups and spoons. would recommend this hotel over and over to all. Will definitely go back for another stay, hopefully soon, the staff were so helpful and the food in the bar downstairs was excellent and reasonably priced also. could not fault this excellent establishment in any way.

Room Tip: We were in room on first floor, a wee bit noisy on Saturday night , however we were in the heart of...

Excellent location on the Royal Mile, minutes from Waverly Station. We stayed in room 5, with big windows and a fantastic view of corner of Bridge Street and High Street. The room was very spacious, the king bed super comfortable. The bathroom was almost as big, with huge seperate tub and shower. There's no real lobby to The hotel. You enter into the bar, which is quite nice. We really enjoyed our stay here and wished we could have stayed longer.
