“Budget hotel - you get what you pay for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 15, 2012

Stayed for one night at the Cairns Hotel in room 26 in the Annexe. It's a triple room with the hardest bed I've ever slept in. I think the floor would have been more comfortable without springs in your back. Shower also not the best as water didn't run away instead filled the shower tray full.
However for £30 per head for two chaps sharing a twin booked a few days out it's cheap and cheerful. As already documented by others this isn't The Ritz but ideal for cheap budget accomation not for a posh weekend away.
I would stay again with mates.

Room Tip: Room 6 in the Annexe.

One night before deciding to go to Edinburgh we searched for a hotel. And there were no options - all places booked!

So between something very expensive and something less expensive, we chose the latter, and the only option available was the Cairn Hotel.

It's an old building. Very old.

The receptionist was very polite, and our booking was there, just needed paying for. Received an old key on an old keyring. I thought even older hotels had upgraded to something safer, but I guess I'm wrong.

From the reception to the room it's a maze of corridors and doors. Lots of doors to go through. But once there, the signal of the free WiFi is still good!

The whole floor is an old squeaky wooden floor covered with an old carpet. Inside the room as well.

After a few minutes in the room, we both started to sneeze. And we're not at all allergic. A few more minutes and our bodies adapted to the air, and we were OK.

Old furniture, old windows (that barely open), old toilet, old closet. Old bed. We both slept well that night, but, be warned: a rare occasion where I could actually feel the springs of the mattress.

The toilet is old but OK. There is an electrical hanger for the towels, but in case you can't get it to work the switch is on the other side of the wall, inside the closet.

View from the window is to some ugly backyards.

The room has a nice LCD TV, and the default kettle and tea/coffee.

Location is OK. About 15min walk to the train station, and about 7min to restaurants and places for breakfast.

I only recommend this for one night, in case you don't find anything else. I wouldn't fancy stay there for more time, or leave my luggage in those rooms.

GBP 80.00 for one night? Unreal.

We stayed one night in the Cairn on 6/10/12. It really needs a visit from the "Hotel Inspector" just to freshen the place up. The carpets are badly worn throughout and the room is very basic and small. There is a tiled shower but it could have done with a good clean in the corners. The bed was clean and we found it comfortable.
However, what more do you expect for the price especially as it is very handy for the Playhouse Theatre (where we were going) and for other central locations. We had the continental breakfast (added cost) and have to say this was the most sparse breakfast we have ever had - don't bother!! And why did the waitress have her jacket on throughout?
Overall adequate for a night or two but we couldn't have handled it for much longer than that.

Stayed for 2 nights at the Cairn 27/09 & 28/09 & was more than happy with this hotel.
People who moan should think about what they are paying for, it's classed as a 2* hotel not 5*.
If you want a 5* hotel & service you need to pay 5* prices.
The room (214) was clean & tidy & had a fully tiled shower room/toilet, it also had t.v. & kettle plus central heating. Although quite small it was not a problem as we only slept there so what's the point in paying for big bedroom space that you don't need?
I have read complaints on here about the hot water & that would be my only (very small) complaint. There "is" hot water but you have to leave the taps or shower running for a while for it to heat up, so be patient.
Also think about the hotel's location before moaning, the hotel is ideally situated for the train station, Princes Street etc. (only 10 minute walk max.) so for what is really a city centre hotel the price is fantastic. I cannot comment on the meals/breakfast as we ate out as there are many cafes, bars & restaurants so close by (all at reasonable prices). The staff we encountered were friendly & helpful so once again I cannot see why some on here have complained. I do wonder sometimes that those who write bad reviews have no real idea about value for money or whether they are other hoteliers trying to give another hotel a bad name.
For a short break I can really recommend the Cairn as it's such good value for money & we will definately stay here again if/when we return to Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Room 214 only has a shower, not sure which rooms (if any) have a bath but maybe best to ask on booki...

Another trip to Edinburgh and another great stay in the Cairn Hotel. This place just gets better and better. For £55, I had a really clean, comfortable and warm room about five minutes away from Princes Street. I'd asked to stay in the same room again and it was great to be back. I've stayed in loads of hotels in Edinburgh over the years, and this is the best by a long way. In quite a pessimistic way, I'm always half expecting the place to have slipped - and it never does! I can thoroughly recommend it.

The last time my room had a good day was sometime in 1982!

Ancient decor, no window lock, dodgy door lock, dysfunctional lighting, decrepit beds, limescale ridden bathroom (grout pens are obviously very expensive) and a musty smell. The staff were polite but not helpful and about the only good thing you can say about the place is that the shower had good pressure, the room was clean, and the Wi-Fi was free.

If you're stuck (as I was) then it's a roof over your head, but otherwise it should be avoided, prices were a total rip off and there are B&B's in town with nicer rooms for half the price.

This hotel was very run down, cold, no hot water in the sinks in the bathroom and the shower walls were black with dirt. The double room was tiny like a shoebox. The breakdfast service was awful the staff could hardly understand or speak any Engligh. We sat at breakfast and waited more than 30 mins to be served until finally we had to stop the breakfast staff and ask for our coffee. Her attitute was awful to a paying guest. We were also told that we did not pay for a cooked breakfast even though our receipt said Bed and Breakfast there was nothing on our receipt to say we were only entitled to the continental breakfast. Whilst I was complaining about the service to the receptionist she answered the phone and started another conversation. How rude never mind the bad customer service. The manager of the hotel was not interested in our views regarding the room and service. I will never return to this hotel, worst ever.
