“I won't be going back”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2007

Yes the staff were very helpful and the breakfast was right up there. But the room - carpet threadbare, loose floor tiles in the bathroom, bed had seen several better days. Teamaker on a clumsy tray with a wire too short to reach the plug. This is an average 3* tourist hotel masquerading in 4 *s. In the three days we were there there was always a coach parked at the front door and its engines seemed to be running most of the time so could not sleep with window open. As to location, if you are going to the fringe, all of the bigger, better venues are right the other end of town so invest in one day bus ticket which worked brilliantly.

We stayed at the Hilton Grosvenor for one night as part of our honeymoon.

We had mentioned it was a special occasion when we booked, and my husband is a HHonors member but we got nothing on check-in other than a 'congratulations' from the receptionist, who was very friendly.

No upgrade, no welcome note, nothing. We weren't expecting flowers and champagne, but a scribble from the Duty Manager would have been appreciated.

Our room (126, I think), was spacious but very tired. Lovely large windows but grotty bathroom. The carpet just outside our room was stuck down with tape. The room was right opposite the lift so we could hear people coming and going into the small hours.

Not the most romantic of stays.

Our party, 6 adults, arrived at the hotel too early to check in. The front desk staff were extremely helpful and allowed us to check our bags into the luggage room for a couple of hours until our rooms were ready. At check in the staff apologised for not being able to give us rooms on the same floor. This caused no problem for us and we were all pleased with the allocated rooms. Two couples had double rooms which were very well appointed and the third couple had a king size bed and a single bed room which was spacious and airy. None of us used the restaurant so I am unable to comment on service. Breakfast at the hotel was advertised at £16 which I thought rather expensive as were the drinks at the bar. Staff were attentive without being intrusive and all were friendly, in particular the housekeeper and the concierge. The hotel is a 10 - 15 minute walk from Princes Street which is just far enough not to encounter noise from the revellers which throng the streets at this time of year. All in all a good hotel where the staff treat you like a human being.

While the staff were generally friendly, the bathroom was covered in mold (both the walls and tiled areas), the television didn't work and the service at breakfast was terrible. Wrote to complain and got a pretty standard letter back which led me to believe they didn't much care.

My husband and I stayed at the Grosvenor for 5 nights in May. We found the Grosvenor to be ideally situated, the rooms old but most certainly charming and we could not have asked for more helpful friendly staff. Nothing was too much trouble for any them and all done with a smile. This hotel would always be our choice for accomodation in Edinburghon any future visits.

1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2007

Stayed here for two nights 15/16 June 2007 and cannot see how this Hotel merits the four stars it claims. The public areas (reception/bar/restaurant) are very nicely finished but away from that the bedrooms are very poor. I do not expect to find mould growing in the rooms of four star hotels and this is not what I would expect of a Hilton. Wasn't cheap either at £120 per night.

We were on the second floor of the main building and once you leave the public areas it is like stepping into another world. The carpets in corridors are threadbare and the rooms very tired. The room, however, was quite big with adequate seating to relax,

Our first night included a free dinner. Don't bother. The food was pretty poor. The duck starter was 3 of the thinnest slivers of overcooked, dried out duck breast on a wierd salad of lettuce and chopped plums. The main course of fillet of sea bass was again the thinnest of fillets with 3 new potatoes and a tasteless sauce. The standard price was £20.50 for 3 courses and if I'd had to pay that I would have been extremely annoyed. There are several decent restaurants near by.

The service at breakfast was also quite poor. After being shown to our tables we were then ignored and had to chase staff to bring us tea/coffee/cutlery. Bread/Rolls/Pastries were stale. Good choice of hot items though.

Overall we would not recommended this hotel to anyone
