“Great staff. Great breakfast. Avoid room 317.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2011

My wife and I stayed 3 nights during the Edinburgh festival. Originally we were shown to room 317. Unfortunately this was the smallest room I have ever seen. It did not even have a full size double bed and the space was so small that there was only about 5 inches between the edge of the bed and the sharp corner of the desk so at night I could forsee lots of bruises on my legs trying to get to the toilet. We complained and were switched to a room along the corridor which was still fairly small but at least we could move around ok. As the building is listed and we were on the top floor which I assume was where the servants live we only had widows at the top third of the wall. The room was clean and had a full size bath and was in good decorative order. The breakfast was excellent and all of the staff could not do enough to help. We paid £83 per night including breakfast so even though the room was small it was good value for the location and time of year.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review.

As the hotel was originally a series of terraced townhouses when built in 1860, all of our rooms vary in size and are unique in their own style, but are all of Hilton standard. Being a townhouse property, windows do get smaller the higher up the building you are. The hotel does not have ‘servants’ accommodation on any of the floors.

I was delighted to read your comments regarding breakfast and our staff; I never tire of reading the positive feedback.

Thank you.

I stayed at this hotel with my husband as it was our 20th wedding anniversary and we wanted to do something special. We arrived at the hotel and was greeted by a very moody receptionist who wasn't helpful and felt like they just wanted to get us out the way as quickly as possible despite the reception not being busy. We were left to struggle over the road to their sister hotel in the poaring rain and when we asked for someone help with our bags we were simply told no one was available.

The hotel over the road was beautifully decorated but the reception staff didn't seem friendly and just sent us to our room.

The room was also decorated nicely but was very very dirty and dusty. The shower screen was covered in water marks with what seemed like left over soap stains on the shower base. The toilet had urine stains on the seat and one of the towels had a large orange stain on it. My husband phoned housekeeping to get the towel replaced which took an hour and when it finally did there was no apology and so much for service with a smile, so far every member of staff has made us feel very unwelcome!! As for the rest of the room it was very dusty and had a damp smell but I suppose the dampness can't be helped although for the money we were paying I would of expected the rooms to be free of damp!

Over all very dissapointed, would certainly not recommend this to a friend!

Thank you for your review.

I am truly sorry for the disappointment caused on your special occasion. I must assure you that this is not our normal service standards; our staff regularly receive high praise for their friendliness and service, we also offer assistance to guests with their luggage as part of the check-in procedure, I am sorry this was not evident during your visit.

Thank you for your comments regarding our Townhouse annexe, this has just undergone a full £1.3 million refurbishment and looks stunning, I have taken onboard your comments regarding the cleanliness of your room, and have discussed these with the Housekeeping team to ensure more care is taken in the future, to ensure the Townhouse remains stunning.

Thank you.

Located near Haymarket station so handy but quiet at the same time. Room modern though bathroom needs a bit of an update. Breakfast service was efficient and there was a good choice on both the buffet and ordered food. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the bar area is relaxing

This hotel is quite old and worn down but it has a classy feeling and, well, being right in the town center, really very convenient. The staff is very friendly and professional, the breakfast was great, the rooms are comfortable and clean, but a bit over_used. An example: there was just a large piece of loose wood covering the sockets under the desk so when I hit it accidentally while working, it fell and hit me hard! On the other hand, the ceiling was 5 m tall with a nice decoration which gave a nice, warm feeling.
What I liked the most is the location: it is a 15 minutes walk to the Royal Mile so you can easily enjoy this great city by foot, if it is not raining...

Thank you for your feedback.

Glad that overall you enjoyed your stay here. The main building was refurbished in 2008 and the Townhouse annexe is looking stunning after a £1.3million full refurbishment.

I am delighted that you enjoyed our Hilton breakfast and that our staff looked after you.

The desk panels are clipped on and attached to the desk, we are now carrying out a check on all desks to ensure no others have come loose.

Thank you.

Stayed at the Hilton Edinburgh Grosv and really enjoyed it.The staff were so helpful at all times. Was so handy to everywhere.A pub just 3mIns walk away was great in all ways. The only fault i found with the Hilton was the net curtains in the bathroom were so so dirty.

Room Tip: Make sure the windows open and close before unpacking

The Hilton Grosvenor is located in an excellent location for visiting Edinburgh, whether for business or vacation. Less than a block from the Haymarket Train station and major buss stops, the hotel is easy to get to and from. The major attractions of Churches, the Castle and the Royal Mile, Grassmarket and shopping of central Edinburgh are all with in walking distance and just "a wee stretch of the legs".

The Hotel itself, is built from what used to be a block of apartments and is quite old. Although it's been largely refurbished, with contemporary furnishings and carpeting in the rooms and common areas, it still feels older. The floors in the rooms and hall ways are uneven and sag and shift, creakily, as you walk. The rooms all have very high - 15 ft - ceilings and are fairly spacious. The sound proofing is lacking and I HIGHLY recommend that you bring earplugs if you wish a good nights sleep, as you can here the opening and closing of doors and conversations in the hall ways from inside your room. None of the rooms have been outfitted with AC, but it's hardly needed in Edinburgh.

The service was very good and everyone was friendly and accommodating. My one major complaint has to do with what seems to be a trend at higher end Hilton properties - no free internet. After charging the traveler a higher room rate, upscale Hilton properties then charge as much as $20 (15 pounds in this case - more than $20!) per day for internet access. This is something other hotels, including lower end Hilton properties, include in the room rate. In this day an age, it is my opinion that this should be included in all room rates.

Thank you for your review.

It was wonderful to read that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us. The hotel building as you stated was built in 1860, and has a most unique character. Most recently our Townhouse annexe has just undergone a full £1.3 million refurbishment at the start of this year.

Internet in most brand chains is still chargeable; we are currently upgrading our internet, and will in the later stages of this year offer free Wi-Fi access in our public areas.

Thank you.

The hotel is easy to get to from the Haymarket BR station and is only about 1oo yards across the road.

Our Room number was 301 in the Main hotel and was functional and clean.

The Hilton breakfast was as usual excellent with plenty of choice.

It is a short 10 min walk up to Prince's Street or if you prefer there are plenty of local buses from the bus stop just around the corner from the hotel into the centre of the city.

The hotel is an ideal location to explore the city or other tourist attractions like the castle or the zoo.
