You really cannot beat the location of the Mercure. We were extremely pleased with the stunning view of the castle from our room and it was an easy walk to the train station and the Old Town. That alone was enough to give the four stars. There were some minor problems - the hotel's decor felt a little worn out and the room for three people felt cramped. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, but not as knowledgeable when it came to some tourist-type questions we had. Overall, we were happy with our stay.

On arrival, the room was overheated, and the cause was quick to find. There is a hot towel rail in the bathroom, connected to a large hot water pipe, is permanently on and cannot be turned off! There is a warning sign telling you not to touch the towel rail as it is so hot. Apparently all the rooms have the same thing. The rooms are quite small, and the window doesn't cool the room too well. A table an is provided, and you have to shut the bathroom door and leave the fan on all day and all night to keep the room vaguely cool. (The fan taking up desk space.) Not a problem for us, as we are used to sleeping with a fan on in hot weather, but it doesn't make for a relaxing stay. The daft thing is that there is a radiator in the room, which can be turned on/off, and if heating were needed, this would be just fine. And we were told by a staff member that there is a central control for the hot pipes, which do occasionally go off. Oh yes, and there is also one of those signs in the bathroom urging people to save the planet by re-using towels - and yet the planet's resources are being wasted big time by heating the hot pipes! All this echoes comments from other reporters.

The weather was fairly normal for the time of year - around 18C during the day, cooler at night. Our room was at the back of the hotel, with the view of the ventilation plant etc.

The hotel, formerly the Mount Royal, appears to have been recently taken over by Accor/Mercure, and presumably it is to be refurbished in due course, but for now it certainly doesn't reach the standards of Mercure hotels we've visited on the continent.

Positives: The location is, of course, perfect, being bang on Princes Street, although this can be a mixed blessing when the street is a wall of people at Festival time. The breakfast room/bar has stunning views of the castle, and would be a good place for viewing the Tattoo fireworks. Free slowish wifi, and free wifi from Marks and Spencer Cloud also available.

Recommended? We were lucky to get a good deal during the Festival, and if you can get similar, then fine, but at other times, cheap deals can be obtained at other hotels nearby. And you would certainly not be pleased if you paid £200-£300 for a room, which is what is asked for short notice bookings at busy times. And the small, oppressive rooms would also not be much fun if you were on an extended business trip and/or had to spend a lot of time in the room.

I note that the Manager replies to each comment. I'm looking for a reply that says that a) the hot water pipes are to be turned off; or b) a plumber is to be engaged to take each towel rail out of circuit, and to fit heavy duty insulation to the pipes.

Room Tip: ask if any rooms do not have the hot pipes

We stayed here in April 12 and were given a room with a castle view - amazing!
The location couldn't be any better - close to the rail station and shops. The old town isn't too far either.
The room was spacious, clean and tidy. We couldn't have asked for more, especially as we didn't pay a lot for our 2nt stay.
The hotel bar had great nighttime views of the castle too!

The hotel is located at the princes street. It's very easy to reach a lot of the attractions by foot. The rooms are not to big, but it's o.k. if you stay just for a few nights. The greatest problem is, that there is no possibility to park the car nearby. The next multi-storey costs 19 pounds per day.

Off to Edinburgh to see the Military Tatoo and a bit of fringe. This Hotel had a 'SPECIAL' offer of £750 for the three nights we wanted (6-9 Aug). We booked a room with panaoramic views and got exactly that. Top floor, full length balcony (which probably hadn't been cleaned in months), Virtually NO storage space in room for clothes, two minute shelves in bathroom. The room itself was sopacious and comfortable, bathroom spotlessly clean.
Afternoon Tea was poor we had scones ,cream and jam...Cream was solid. Breakfast was buffet and ok but just ok till last morning when there was NO butter. Have some spread it's just the same said the East EU waiter. I demanded butter to be told there was NONE. Higher ranking waiter called and after 10 minutes produced a red hot plate with a slice of frozen butter quickly liquidising.
The rates are criminal. £250.00 per room per night (festival rate) normall rate £varying around £100.00. Hotel costs are not at premium like Christmas so why the massive hike. Yes it's the Festival, but not really a reason to ROB PEOPLE BLIND! Excuse is that the demand is so high! There should be laws about this type of totally dishonest profiteering.

Room Tip: Rooms very good, lifts a pain as you need your key card, Restaurant is terrible...
