“Very Disapopinted ... wouldn't go back!!”
Reviewed July 11, 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Scotsman Hotel over the weekend, and I have to say we were very disappointed. The room was very tired looking, the walls needed painted, the carpet was dirty and frayed and the decor was very old fashioned. We would not class this hotel as a 5 star!!! One plus point was the staff were very efficient and friendly. We would not visit again. We couldn't wait to get home!!

The service you get here is unbelievable. By far the best I have encountered in all of Britain. The rooms are nice and spacious, all though the decor might be a bit dated. But all in all you get more then you thought for a five star hotel. The location is brilliant, just upon the royal mile and just a stroll from the train station. But most of all what catches you with this lace is the friendly, helpsom and outstanding service minded staff. I have stayed at three hotels in Edinburgh, but will from now on stick with the Scotsman.

We spent 6/26-7/3/10 in Edinburgh, spending 6 nights at the Scotsman. From our arrival, we knew we made the right choice. First of all, it's a perfect location. Centrally located to the Old Town and Royal Mile. Secondly, the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. From Sarah checking us in to Alasdair helping us get acquainted with our 'home" for a week. And Ivor.....He took the time to give us a complete tour of the Hotel's spa, restaurant, and facilities. He shared the history of the property and greeted every guest we came across by name. On departure, the staff arranged a 4:30 a.m. taxi for us. The restaurant did not disappoint either. Food was well prepared and presented. Because of the hotel's historical status, central air is not an option. We did not find that to be an issue. We would certainly stay at the Scotsman on our next visit to Edinburgh.

Stayed here in July 2010 for one night on business in a deluxe room.
Very friendly staff and extremely helpful.
Excellent facilities both in room and the general amenities in the hotel.
Hotel Decor good and the hotel and room were very clean.
Room service food was excellent and reasonably priced.
Talking of price, I found the room rate reasonable - its 5 star quality after all.
The location was very good too, not that you really get to appreciate that on a business trip.
I'm impressed enough with the hotel to want to come back and bring the family for a leisure break, can't get a better recommendation than that.

Excellent location, close to Princes Street and the Royal Mile. The staff in the hotel were very friendly and very helpful. The price for a room was very reasonable when you take into consideration where the hotel is located. Highly recommend this hotel.

My partner and I stayed at The Scotsman on one of our many trips to Edinburgh (we do not live too far away, and it is such a fantastic city that we visit it as often as we can!), and we are just sad that we didn't stay here earlier! It is one of the best hotels that I have ever stayed in, and a real throwback to the days that five stars meant something truly special.

Our room was big and spacious, and had a lovely view overlooking North Bridge. The staff were so friendly and so helpful; they even let me go behind the reception desk to use their printer, and just worked around me, like true professionals! The bar is lovely, very modern without being too austere (which is common, and my partner and I really hate!), and the barmen can make an excellent Tom Collins!

There is a gym and spa and swimming pool, but I think it is for non-hotel guests too, because you have to walk and take a special lift and it seems quite separate, but it is very nice. The swimming pool is under a roof that makes you feel like you are in a factory, which is a little bit strange at first but the pool is lovely so it doesn't really matter.

The Scotsman is a beautiful and excellent hotel in an excellent location, and my partner and I are looking forward to staying there again!

A really fantastic hotel with great staff and beautiful rooms. The old Scotsman newsparer building has been cleverly converted into a 5 star hotel without losing any of the charm and Victorian elegance of the original building itself. Out room ws on the 8th floor with a view right over the city and with all the amenities one expects from a 5 star property. The breakfasts were more than adequtes with a good chice of hot and cold dishes. We were most impressed by the staff who were helpful , courteous and really showed an interest.- not always the case these days. We would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a superb hotel in a great position.
