“Great Location, Helpful Staff”
Reviewed January 7, 2007

My wife and I have just returned from a two night stay in the Scotsman and were more than happy with our £100/night deluxe room. Whether it is worth the £250 rack rate or the £400 quoted for the weekends when the Scottish rugby team are playing remains to be seen.

In terms of location it is hard to find a better placed hotel in Edinburgh, such is the Scotsman's proximity to both the Royal Mile and Princes Street (a couple of minutes walk to either destination). We also found the staff to be friendly and helpful, we had emailed ahead and were granted our request for an early check in (at 11.30), and during the course of the weekend nothing seemed to be of any trouble to them.

Having spent four years in Edinburgh during university I was aware that the Airport bus is excellent value (£5 return) and is certainly a good option for Scotsman guests as the final stop is Waverly Station (a few minutes walk from the Scotsman's lower entrance) Considering that a taxi usually costs £15-20 each way only those who have a reason to need a taxi should consider it a preferable option.

Our room was spacious and had a few nice touches like surround sound for the plasma screen tv and privacy hatch for room service. We had a lovely hot chocolate in the hotel brasserie after a morning of ice skating in Princes Street Gardens and also enjoyed a delicious lunch there on the Sunday afternoon before we left.

why only four out of five? The lifts are a disaster - especially if you are bound for the otherwise excellent spa facilities. You have to change lifts, wander narrow corriders that don't seem to lead anywhere, before finally crossing a bridge and taking another lift down to the basement. they frequently took forever to arrive and were out of order at other times. The other problem is less of the Scotsman's making in that it has the misfortune of being in the shadow (literally) of it's larger and grander rival The Balmoral. Having now stayed in both hotels It was obvious to me that although the Scotsman has been designed with sereral modern touches in an effort to offer an alternative to the grand dames of the Balmoral and The Caledonian it will always be measured against it's more traditional rivals. In that competition it doesn't quite measure up.....yet

Very nice hotel indeed. Paid £129 for deluxe room and wasn't disappointed. Had large room wiv tv and seperate office section over the back. Bathroom was very nice with best shower hav ever used! Superb location just on border of edinburgh's old town, excellent to explore royal mile and ghost walks in evening. Our cases were carried up to our room and after the bar closed we were shown to a private room where we cld continue drinking for as long as we wanted. Highly recommended!

We booked the scotsman hotel for our 1st anniversary what can i say. From the moment we were met by the porters to the moment we left we found the staff to be very help and charming. Our room had the most wonderful view and in the morning we sat and ate our breakfast in the bay window watching the world go by. Breakfast was great. O.K so we paid £250 but it was worth every penny the bathroom was new withall mod cons and very attractive and so was the room, it was more like a self contained flat. We loved it there and would have no problem with booking it again. Thank you for making our first anniversary so wonderful

We are currently on a train after spending the first half of our honeymoon at the Scotsman Hotel in Edinburgh. We both absolutely loved it. The rooms were great. I will agree with some of the previous posts about the lack of climate control. We had our windows open to compensate for the heat. The bathrooms were good sized and the service was excellent. We did have breakfast once on our week stay, I will say that was definately not the highlight of our trip. The food was average at best. My wife and I used the spa and gym downstairs both of which were great. The WIFI in the room was extremely pricey.
Our only had one real problem with the Hotel during our visit. The hot water was off for over 12 hours not that this was a huge deal in itself but we could not get a straight answer on when it would come back on.

I would recommend this hotel but with a few suggestions to anyone staying there.
1) We spoke with a girl by the name of Leigh (in the gym) who was an absolute gem and gave us guidance on where to go and where to eat and drink
2) WIFI is overpriced, there is another network you can use depending on your network card (wireless) it is about 1/4 the cost
3) The food we ordered from room service differed greatly. The weekday food was much better than the weekend.
4) I would definately eat somewhere other than hotel. Fortunately there are lots of other places right next to the hotel.

I've been lucky enough to stay in some fantastic hotels and The Scotsman is one of the best. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the room (we had 303) was beautiful - wooden panelling and a view out over Waverley Station (but quadruple glazing kept out the noise). Unlike many similar hotels where you could be anywhere in the world this was definitely Edinburgh at its best.

When I checked in I discovered that my girlfriend had booked for the wrong date but it wasn't a problem and the staff gave me a complimentary drink while our room was prepared.

From the very comfortable bed to the delicious biscuits everything worked perfectly.

Only had a swim in the (very cool) pool but the rest of the gym looked good too. No time to try the restaurant but the bar was up to scratch - and an excellent pint of Bellhaven.

Will I be back? Definitely. Will I be staying anywhere else in Edinburgh? Definitely not.

I recently spent one night at The Scotsman and enjoyed the experience. The greeting at the door was friendly and the reception staff were helpful and polite. The standard room we had was large, with an extremely comfortable bed and a flat screen television. The bathroom was big with a powerful overhead shower and a fabulous range of 'Cowshed' products. The shampoo and conditioner were the best I've used at any hotel. The rooms had lovely tweed curtains and alongside them was information regarding the history of the particular fabric used. The hotel's leisure facilities were good. The pool was an adequate size and there was a relaxing spa pool. I found the steps down to the pool area to be quite slippy, however I think there is a lift for infirm or elderly people. The main restaurant was closed on the night we stayed at the hotel (Tuesday) so we ate in the brasserie instead. The food was good - but not spectacular. Two courses and a bottle of wine and water came to around £60 for the two of us. What was spectacular was the wonderful eclectic mix of new and old architecture in the brasserie area. This was reflected throughout the hotel - there were many remnants of the previous usage of the building - the headquarters of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. It was a shame that the art work on display generally did not match the ambience of the building. It would be so much better to see art work inspired by the history of 'The Scotsman' newspaper. Over all I would return to The Scotsman, my experience was a good one and the location was superb.

  • Liked — Cowshed products!
  • Disliked — Art work on the walls!
  • Tips/Secrets — Breakfast was pricey at £17.50 a head. Better off eating elsewhere.

Had read other reviews and did not expect much.

Turned out that the enterance was right on the bridge, bright, fresh and clean. (no tramps or drunks) Parked the car outside a short walk to reception. Checked in, concierge picked up bags walked us to the room then parked the car. No hassle at all. On entering the room the sun was in the west and the room was bright and fresh.

A most comfortable and relaxing room.

We went out for dinner, but popped in to the North Bridge restaurant for a hot chocolate as it was closing. Very enjoyable end to the day.

Breakfast was excelent.
