“Quality hotel despite the interrupted sleep!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

This is the third time of staying at this hotel and as always the size and comfort of the room was excellent and really it is the excellent staff, in particular the concierge which really make this hotel stand out. Unfortunately on Friday night there was a loud party going on in a venue nearby and our room must have been on the side nearest the venue as we had audible music until 3am. On Saturday/Sunday at 2.30am the fire alarm went off, an apology note was put through our door and a further apology was made on checkout. For us, these were largely unavoidable and the overall quality means we can over look these.

We stayed 5 nights at this perfectly located facility. It was a wonderful trip. The concierge and desk staff were truly wonderful to work with to make most of our first trip to Scotland. Room was beautiful and staff attentive to all our needs. Would definitely recommend to anyone

To be honest the hotel room was ok, the breakfast was ok, but this hotel and it's team managed to completely take the pleasure out of our first anniversary stay. As a surprise my brother in law had organised a bottle of champagne for our arrival as an anniversary gift. It didn't arrive, when he rang to ask if we'd enjoyed it, we were at first embarrassed to have to chase the hotel team for it. This embarrassment turned to frustration that after speaking to 3 different people, it still didn't arrive, and he had was charged. Not 5 star service, in fact the premier inn gives better service. We complained via email to the hotel manager, no reply. The duty manager who had already failed to deliver the champagne promised to get the hotel manager to ring on Monday.....it's Thursday and still no response. This hotel isn't cheap, and we thought we would treat ourselves - completely spoilt our memories of Edinburgh. Do yourself a favour - go somewhere else who values your custom. This was easily solvable within minutes of our initial enquiry - 17 days and no resolution is a joke.

Room Tip: Don't book!

I alighted from the East Coast service that took just 4hrs 22 mins from London and asked the way to The Scotsman Hotel. My guess is that 39 steps up from the platform and I arrived at the lower road level entrance to the hotel (not well signed but clear enough). Through the Spa entrance, into a lift and the Reception on the 4th floor beckoned - this was actually the road level entrance from the high North Bridge road. I suppose that this might be classified as a boutique style hotel having been converted from the former offices of The Scotsman newspaper - did I really sleep in the room where Andrew Neill typed up his early reports?
One minor issue was the lift - rather slow to traverse the floors and very slow on door movements. However my double bedded room was large and full of character and it did not matter overmuch that there was no view at all of Edinburgh. Do ask when booking if the room is inward facing or have a view of the City. Their was plenty of wardrobe and drawer space, the TV was well positioned and wide screen model. The electric kettle was faulty so this was a concern at 6.30am for my morning cuppa watching Sky News (can't bear to watch BBC Breakfast since moving north to Salford - what was the Board thinking of to make such a crass decision?)
My two, now familiar, hotel room gripes surfaced yet again : no safety rails to aid movement in and out of a deep bath with shower attachment. On any proper H&S risk assessment by senior management this would have been quickly rectified. It is just not good enough for a hotel with 5 * pretensions. Also suffered more back ache from a very low height chair whilst working on my laptop at the inadequately small desk area. Surely this hotel wants to encourage business visitors
but this is a turn off. Subject to sorting my above complaints, this is a very convenient and well managed hotel is a great part of the City.

Room Tip: Ask what views are available from the room

Thank you for taking the time to record your positive comments regarding your recent visit to the Scotsman Hotel. We are very lucky to occupy such a central location in Edinburgh city centre.
I have noted all your points regarding the safety rails in the bathroom and also the chair in the room. All feedback is taken on and discussed with the relevant departments and I would like to thank you for taking the time to pass this onto us.

I hope that you will return to stay with us and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Kindest regards

The Scotsman, I'm disappointed.

My wife and I booked and paid for a room in the Scotsman through Lastminute.com, but on arrival the reception staff insisted that payment had not been taken by Lastminute and charged us for a second time.

Worse though, when on our return home we confirmed with our bank that two payments had been taken, we contacted The Scotsman, twice by phone (we were assured our calls would be returned) and once by email. However, we have not had any response whatsoever in five days.

Very disappointed as we will now have to take this up with our bank or Lastminute.com, hassle we don't want.

Stayed for 2 nights for anniversary and birthday. Booked deluxe room but was upgraded to editor room on arrival which was great. The wood panelled one used in photos. Really enjoyed stay, spa is really nice, staff attentive without being overbearing. Building full of character as converted in 2001, it's not perfectly finished as boutique hotel but that's not what we wanted. Great location, easy for station, royal mile and theatre. Would definitely go again.

We stayed at this hotel for one night last Saturday,29th March 2014. Our room 202 was lovely and far bigger than expected. So comfortable and luxurious. Fraser was very attentive on showing us round and all staff exceptionally professional and friendly. Could not do enough and never passed without eye contact and a pleasant word. Cannot recommend this hotel highly enough and will certainly return at the earliest opportunity.

Room Tip: Room 202 was lovely and quiet.
