My wife surprised me with a night in the Penthouse suite at the Scotsman on our 25th wedding anniversary this year. We had an amazing time, the staff were absolutely excellent. The hotel sent up a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and an anniversary card which was really thoughtful. The food from the restaurants was also very good, we had lunch sent up to the room and had it placed in the privacy hatch. We also ate our evening meal downstairs in the North Bridge Brasserie (part of the Hotel but also had it's own entrance) again the food was excellent. The menu was very good with plenty to choose from and there was a really good wine list to compliment the food. With this hotel being in the centre of Edinburgh there was plenty to see and do, we went for a walk round Princes Street gardens which was a really good way to work off the over indulgence of the night before. The fringe was about to start the following week so there were loads of street performers and shows happening all over the place so the walk was very entertaining to say the least. I would recommend a visit to the Scotsman for anybody looking to do something really special or just to be treated like a king or queen.

Really nice. I think it is the staff that make me feel so positive about this hotel. From the doorman (who nothing was a problem - even me being a disgrace when turning up drunk and losing me keys) to the reception staff. The rooms are comfortable (although the price of water is a disgrace...come on!). it is very scottish and i like that!

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a weekend at the beginning of October.
This hotel is a fantastic old style hotel and is smack bang in the city centre.
When you come out of the train station come up the stairs and look to your left and you will see the Scotsmans Spa and the Scotsman stairwell, take these stairs and they will take you straight to the entrance of the Hotel. Take your time as there are a lot of stairs.
When you arrive at the hotel you are met by a doorman who opens the door which from the beginning makes you feel special. When you check in you take a seat which is lovely when you are used to just standing in a queue. Once checked in you are taken up to your room by a bellboy, another bit of luxury and he shows you how to get into your room as you don’t have a card as is normal these days but an electronic key which looks like a car key. We had a ’Study Room, room number 608, this is a lovely room that looks across the rooftops of Edinburgh. The room comes with an electronic safe, mini bar, sky TV, tea and coffee making facilities with complementary shortbread. In the wardrobe there is a fan for when it gets too hot and a brolly for you to use when it’s raining. Every evening your bed is turned down and your bathrobes and slippers are laid out for you and the bed side lights are switched on, this is so cosy when you come in from a chilly Edinburgh evening out. There is also a complementary bottle of Scotsman water and glasses laid out for you every evening. When you order room service they don’t come into your room they put your order into the privacy hatch which opens from the outside of your room and you can then access room service from the inside which is great as you don’t have to open the door to anyone. When you want to not be disturbed there is a switch on the wall which lights a red light on the outside and gives you privacy. The Hotel is in a great position for everything, bars, restaurants and tourist attractions. If you take the stairs down outside the Hotel and turn left you will find the Edinburgh Dungeon, be prepared to scream your heads off ha ha. Try one of the spooky tours there are various ones two go under Edinburgh which we have done both and can recommend both or try one that takes you into the Grayfriars Grave Yard at night which is also interesting but wrap up well as it gets really chilly at night. All of these tours can be booked on the Royal Mile, you will see all the guides up and down the Mile in the evening or you can book on line before you go.
One bar the my husband and I can recommend is the Scotsman’s Lounge, if you come out of the hotel turn right and then right again and right again down the hill you will find it. It looks like nothing when you go in but has live music on a Friday afternoon into evening and also on Saturday night. The bar has loads of different people at the weekend for example you can have guys in work clothes that have stayed out, tourists from all over the world, people in suits and dresses all mixing in and dancing with each other its one of the nicest atmospheres in a bar that I have found in a very long time. The guys who sing are great and will sing anything that you ask them to and it is a great laugh, I guarantee when you go home you will miss not only the bar but the entertainment.

This was a truly brilliant hotel experience! The best thing (and the most important, in my view) are the staff. They just did not know the word "no". Nothing was ever too much trouble. All requests were met with efficiency and courtesy. On one occasion we had been to the theatre and returned to the hotel at about midnight. The staff prepared us a little meal in the bar and stayed open especially for us!
The room was spacious and sumptuous. The shower was brilliant. We also had some lovely quality towels and bed linen. I also went to the gym which was well equipped and pleasant.
When we left, Ivor the doorman actually took our baggage to Waverly station and even put us on the train! Above and beyond the call of duty, surely.
There must have been some negatives, but I really cannot remember them. The staff were just amazing and I am reliably informed that the hotel is just brilliantly managed. All the people there were so friendly and could not do enough for us.
Thank-you for a brilliant couple of days. My friend and I are already planning our next trip back to the Scotsman.

This was our second visit to the Scotsman, and it certainly won't be our last. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite complete with sauna, and it was lovely- thank you! All the concierges are magnificent, and do their work with gret enthusiasm and a genuine desire to make one's stay special.
The bathroom was spacious, bed area comfortable and the sitting area was like a small sitting room. On arrival, we received a lovely card and a platter of 'sweets' to welcome us. It is small, but important, touches like these that make a trip memorable.
Breakfast was reasonably priced and ample, and dinner was delicious.
Roll on our next visit!!!

Great location, right by Waverley station (but no train noise), gorgeous decor, luxurious bathrooms, nice toiletries, quality bedding, great staff, beautiful building, nice extras like slippers, sumptuous spa. I actually felt sad leaving after our 2-night stay, I enjoyed it so much. When in Scotland, I want all that traditional tweediness, not a modern glass-and-steel hotel, and the Scotsman has this in spades. As soon as you walk into the gorgeous lobby, you feel that you're somewhere special. Our room on the 7th floor had a great view, huge amounts of storage, and a lovely bathroom. The staff were helpful right from our first phone call, to get directions to the car park. This was one negative: it wasn't clear when we booked that parking was at the station. Even with a 30% discount, the parking cost £26 for 2 nights, which was a nasty shock. Better to arrive by train. The only other negative was the cost of food: we didn't eat there once. With so many dining options close by, you can do better (try the Arcade on Cockburn St, right around the corner). If they moderated the cost of the food, and found a cheaper parking option, this hotel would be perfect. I would love to return.

Room Tip: 701 was great

Thank you very much for your review regarding your recent stay at the Scotsman. I appreciate you taking the time to make your comments, and would like to take this opportunity firstly to apologise as well as responding to the points you have made.
We like to pride ourselves on our professionalism, relaxing atmosphere and service throughout the hotel; I am pleased to see that you experienced all of these and enjoyed your stay.
Although we don’t provide a car park at the hotel; our guests receive a discounted rate at the local public car park which is only a 3 minute walk away from the Scotsman. I’m sorry that this was a disappointment to you; as one of the traditional Victorian buildings in the city we are unable to accommodate our own car park and for this reason have never advertised this service.

I can would like to offer you an assurance that our menu is priced competitively with all other 5 star city centre restaurants in Edinburgh; however I’m sorry that we did not meet your personal expectations

I hope you will choose to return to stay with us in the future

Kind Regards
Claire Thomas
