“Magical Macabre in the heart of Old Town”

We stayed at this Greyfriars gem during the last leg of the Edinburgh International Festival. As trip planner in the relationship I was tasked with reviewing all the limited accommodation options during the city's, perhaps the country's biggest event of the year. Whilst weighing out the pros and cons of the limited supply of available rentals, what was very impressionable to me initially was the personal service that Vacation Rentals Scotland provided. As soon as I had completed and submitted a booking form online, I was contacted by an amiable gentleman, Martin, THROUGH PHONE! It was a very special greeting that could not be overlooked and having been in the customer service/human resources fields I took this proactive approach to service as a good indicator of the firm's professionalism. Needless to say the reservation and payment process was expeditious and seamless. All the staff were very kind and helpful.
We were sent the keys in advance and found the flat very easily. The directions provided by Martin and his team were once again faultless. The flat itself was a historic walk up which might provide antagonizing for those with larger suitcases or for those who have impaired mobility. However, the advantage of a walk up reveals itself in the great view over the adjacent Greyfriars Kirkyard. (If you have any hesitation with graveyards or non-extants then I would suggest another rental as you are practically sleeping on the necropolis. You could literally open the window jump onto the roof of an 18th century mausoleum and bound down to the city of the dead and you'll be trolling the weathered markers in a matter of seconds). There were constant tourists visiting the Kirkyard throughout the day and although they were visible through the windows they were not loud or obnoxious in any way.
The accommodation itself was very quaint if not a little dated. All the appliances were in working order. There was a great array of entertainment options provided to us in the flat: wifi, a tv with some good channels, cool DVDs and interesting tourist books interpolated with periodicals and everything else Scotland related. A washing machine in the flat made clean clothes easy but the lack of a dryer meant that dry clothes were not. The space was not huge but plenty for two people. We were surprised that on our arrival our flat had not been serviced having been left in a semi deranged state. According to the property management team this was due to error and we received a very apologetic email. It was a bit of a disappointment as their service had been so exemplary up to that point. After the flat had been cleaned and serviced we were much more at ease.
Enough cannot be said about the flat's location. It is truly ideal especially for those looking to stay during the Edinburgh International Festival. Other places of interest like the National Museum of Scotland and the National Library are directly across the street. Ubiquitous pubs, eateries, cafes and convenience stores line the street perpendicular to the flat's so finding something to eat is easy but choosing what might prove more difficult. For getaways from the city, Waverley Station is a brisk 15 minute walk. Nearby bus stops and taxis provided easy accessibility. All in all a perfect home base.
Although our stay at this vacation rental was not perfect, this is a situation where the pros definitely outweigh the cons. Moreover, the price we paid during the Edinburgh International Festival was extremely competitive. Come to think of it, we wished we could have stayed longer. If you stay here, make sure to visit Mum's Restaurant across the street and try their Treacle Dessert. It was mos def the one of the tastiest things we ate in the city AND we devoured everything in sight in this Athens of the North.

Happy Travels.

Management Response

Hi Alberto, Sorry to hear that you were cold at times. The heating should have been switched on for you (and there are instructions in the guest information about how to switch it on and off). Heating is available for guests 12 months of the year. We are always available by phone or email to help out with switching the heating on, etc. if there are any difficulties. Best wishes, Martin

Thanks for your note about the heating. We noticed a problem with the heating after you had left, so it was fixed for the next guests. Sorry to hear that the radiators were not working, but we're glad that the gas fire kept you cosy.

A note for future guests: We are always available by phone or email to respond to problems like this straight away.
