“Castle Views”
Reviewed July 7, 2014 via mobile

Our room had a fabulous view of the castle. Facilities were very clean and staff were helpful. The location of the hotel is very convenient, opposite an assortment of restaurants, cafés and bars and the stop for the sightseeing bus is out the front. Minor flaw-no fridge in room.

Great hotel. Clean, modern and good size. We found the washroom clean and ample. Free wi/fi too. The location couldn't be better. Love this city and we were close to everything. We had a view of the castle which was about a 15 minute walk away.

Room Tip: We had a few of the castle although some of the other tour passengers did not. you might want to as...

The reception staff were welcoming and friendly. I was given a choice of a front room with splendid view of the Castle, or a quiet room, as the front of the hotel overlooked a very busy street, full of bars and restaurants. I chose a rear-facing quiet room, which was comfortable and very quiet. The bathroom had bath and spacious walk in shower, which was pleasant to use. The beverage tray was well stocked. The only downside was that the potentially convenient gang of electric sockets in the dressing table was not working. There was no air conditioning but a fan was provided. I was disturbed by other guests slamming their doors and I realised that there was no other way of closing them, as they had a heavy closing mechanism. Breakfast was a combination of buffet and a hot dish to order. The range and quality was very good, but they could only offer me fresh decaffeinated coffee from the machine at a supplement of £1.50, which really is not on, given that people having regular coffee were given a large pot. I mentioned this to the receptionist who, thankfully waived the fee. Ideal for seeing all the sights of Edinburgh and near to lots of restaurants. Recommended.

Room Tip: Front rooms face the Castle but are potentially noisy from the street below. Rear rooms are quiet.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your review and it's always great that our guests take the time to give us constructive feedback. I very much take on board your feedback regarding the doors, these doors are heavy because they are fire doors and have the self closers on them to ensure that the close securely for our guests, I have instructed out maintenance team to check the doors around the room that you occupied as they should not be making that much noise. We have checked the plugs within the desk and they are all working fine, it might have been the housekeeper who unplugged them to vacuum the room have forgot to plug the main socket back into the wall, my apologies for the inconvenience caused to you.
I am confused with the issue regarding the charge for de-caffeinated coffee; we do charge a supplement for speciality coffees at breakfast and guests can consume as much filter coffee and tea as they like and that includes de-caffeinated, the only thing I can think of is that it was a new member of our team who has got a little confused. Our Restaurant Manager as carried out retraining with his team to avoid this from happening again and I am truly sorry if this left you feeling a little down after what was otherwise a good stay.
Once again thank you for your valuable feedback and hopefully we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Apex City in the near future.
Kind regards

Myself and my friend stayed there for weekend the front desk staff were really friendly and the rooms were clean.
My only problem was the last night we were getting cab from hotel to the airport and the key card wouldn't work in the door so we were locked inside and the master key wouldn't work from the other side. It took over a half hour to break in the door to the room and it was very unsafe if a fire occurred. There was no apologies from the two men who broke the door more of an accusation on how we broke the door. Which I found insulting because it was the actual lock that was stuck. Not to mention I was panicking in the room claustrophobia. Our cab was paid to the airport but still it was like they tried to rush us out of the door so we couldn't complain. We heard nothing from them since. They obviously do not want repeat custom.

We stayed at the Apex City Hotel after a long flight and it was an excellent hotel. The check in was quick and friendly and the room was small but very clean and the beds were comfortable. The best part is the location, right in the Grassmarket section of Edinburgh. We sat in the bar with some excellent beer and looked right at the castle, and after dinner we walked the Royal Mile and shopped in the stores and listened to a bagpiper playing in front of the government building. What a night. Our room was very quiet.

The breakfast was excellent and included a full Scottish breakfast with eggs, sausage, ham, haggis, toast and croissants. Plus tea and coffee of course. You could order specialty items as well if you liked, but the Scottish breakfast suited us just fine. All in all this was a very pleasant hotel with great amenities and we enjoyed our stay there.

We stayed here for 2 nights in June. Our room was average size, tastefully decorated overlooking a side road, It was nice and quiet although pretty warm (a fan was provided). The bathroom was immaculate and came complete with Elemis cosmetics (do bring body cream though) which was a lovely touch. There was a separate bathtub and large shower cubicle. Great water pressure!! The staff were really helpful and friendly.
We ate dinner at the hotel one night which was nice and reasonably priced. We also had breakfast one day, there was a combination off buffet items (continental) etc., and various egg options cooked to order.

WiFi worked well (it's free). I don't think there is a fitness centre.

We really enjoyed our stay, it's about 10 - 15 minutes walk from the city centre, the castle is very close by (you can walk to it up a LOT of steps if you're so inclined) and there are absolutely tonnes of local amenities. We checked out a couple of restaurants in the area and watched one of the World Cup games at a nice local pub. If you're looking for good coffee, I can recommend Filament coffee on nearby Victoria Street and we had dinner one night at the Atelier, which was about 10 minutes walk away. Please note there is another Apex hotel on the same street (the Apex International, I think it's called). It seemed to be closed for renovations while we were there.
A very pleasant stay!

Dear Mayothamayo,

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review on the Apex City and it was great to hear that you enjoyed your stay and made the most of our central location. It is always good when guests share such positive views on our service and facilities which enables other customers to make the right choice when choosing a hotel.
The Apex International which is located a few minutes away from us was having some re-decoration carried out on it's restuarant which I'm pleased to say is completed.
Our guests at the City are able to use the gym and swimming pool at the Apex International at no additional cost.

Once again thank you so much for your review
Kind regards

Booked a room here for a birthday treat for my wife and what a treat it was.

I had emailed beforehand to see if there were any rooms available with a view of the castle but was told that the rooms at the front were the suite rooms at a surcharge, obviously.

We arrived early to try and get a parking space as there is only about 8 available and was lucky enough to get one at £10.00 for overnight which is great for Edinburgh.

It was at this point that Angie at reception told me that as it was my wife's birthday they had given us an upgrade to one of the suite rooms, well you could have knocked me down there and then as we have never been so lucky before in all our travels. Result!!

When we made our way to the room 4107 it more than met with approval, lovely large living area with dining table, sofa, large tv, coffee table and a Nespresso machine.

The adjacent bedroom was also very big with a massive Queen size bed and another large tv as well as plenty of storage which contained robes and slippers.

Then to make things even better we had magnificent views of the Castle and the Grassmarket area from all 3 windows, just what we wished for.

Another gesture was a card left on our desk wishing my wife a happy birthday and to tell us to go to the bar for a free drink of our choice each.

After a very enjoyable, late and needless to say hectic night in Edinburgh we awoke the next day and headed down for breakfast which was excellent with various choices both hot and cold. So it was a full Scottish for us.....

So I would love to thank all at the Apex City for making a short stay one of the best we have had anywhere and a special thank you to Angie at reception for her warm welcome, all her help and of course that upgrade.......

Thank you very much for taking the time to complete a review on your recent stay and that we were able to make your short visit memorable, it's always nice to be able to surprise our guests. Our suites are very spacious and it's such a shame you weren't able to stay longer to make the most out of the room, you'll have to bring your wife back next year!

I was also pleased to hear that you enjoyed your hearty breakfast which will have set you up for a busy sight seeing day.

I have also passed over your thanks to Angie who looked after you and she says thank you for the kind words.

Hopefully we will have the opportunity to welcome you both back in the very near future.
