My wife and I stayed at the Channing's for a weekend break, the room was filthy (dusty), small and at the top of a small winding stair.
The meal in there restaurant at night was what they called a tasting menu which was a big disappointment for what they charged.
Would not recommend the Channing's

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in Channings last month as we celebrated a very special event – our wedding. Having read some of the previous reviews in the weeks leading up to our stay, I was a little apprehensive about our choice, but my fears were unfounded.

We had a superior room (first floor at front of hotel – very quiet), which was certainly not lacking in space. (Granted, some of the other rooms do appear to be quite small, so careful choice of room on booking may be advisable). The room was beautifully furnished in a style sympathetic to the age and ambience of the building. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept in. Room and bathroom were both very clean.

Following our wedding ceremony, we enjoyed an excellent meal in the Kingsleigh Private Dining Suite. Maeve, our attendant for the evening, was extraordinarily attentive and really added to our enjoyment. Our guests commented on the wonderful atmosphere (and enjoyed it fully into the wee small hours).

All of the staff we encountered were friendly (without being overly intrusive), professional and helpful. The restaurant is excellent and the hotel exuded both charm and calm. Yes, it is a little bit outside the city centre, but a short walk brings you to Princess Street and helps burn off the calories from the really good breakfasts.

If you want leisure centres, anonymity and bland furnishings, then this is not the place for you. If you’re looking for something a little different, with bags of character (and a creaking floorboard or two, which have not been airbrushed out), then I sincerely recommend Channings. Now, I wonder how my husband’s getting on with that first anniversary reservation?

Channings in Edinburgh is an informal, relaxed hotel with a very friendly approach. It occupies five Edwardian townhouses in Stockbridge, one of Edinburgh's most popular 'urban villages'. Channings is a wonderfully quirky property which feels a bit like a Scottish country home, full of charming Victorian paintings, prints, books, furniture and memorabilia reflecting the history of previous tenant Sir Ernest Shackleton. ... more   less
