We booked this 2 night break for our wedding Anniversary. At reception we had a very warm welcome we was wished happy Anniversary and was given an upgrade room, and everything we needed to know was explained to us. the room no. 60 was really lovely lots of room lovely bathroom, comfortable bed. we eat once in hotel bar food was really nice. breakfast was a menu for the cooked and cooked to order. The hotel is a bit of a walk to Edinburgh town but a nice quite location, but there are buses just round the corner from the hotel if you don't want to walk. The hotel and rooms are very clean and all the staff are really lovely and friendly. We had a really lovely break, thank you to all the staff.

We booked Channing's through Sceptre Tours and also read TA reviews. We experienced many positives but also some disappointments. We did like the location - very quiet residential area with lovely views of the gardens across the street. Not a problem for us but it's a 20-30 minute walk to Old Town and in foul weather, not very comfortable. Local buses are an option if you can master the schedules. Metered parking on the street.

We booked a superior double and felt it was worth the additional 30 pounds/night. The bedroom and bathroom are much larger than the standard double, have comfortable chairs in the window alcove, and face the gardens. We had to change rooms upon arrival because the toilet didn't flush and they did not have anyone on staff to tend to it. The second room was actually a better location - on the second floor at the end so very quiet with no foot traffic. Both rooms need to be redone - the furniture was chipped and scratched and the upholstered chairs were badly stained. "Shabby" is the best description and certainly not what we expected for a 4 star lodging. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was updated.

Breakfast was included in the room cost and was excellent. The conservancy was bright and comfortable and the servers friendly and efficient. The buffet had wonderful pastries and plenty of fresh fruits. The hot breakfast was cooked to order and perfect.

The housekeeping staff and the reception staff were very helpful. However, we did have an unfortunate experience. We had a med that required refrigeration and inquired before arrival if they could accommodate us and they assured us they could. When we retrieved the med, the temperature was over 60 degrees. We spent time and money contacting the US pharmaceutical company to determine if the med was damaged. We asked to speak to the manager but he was not available.

Bottom line - quiet location, rooms need updating, fantastic breakfast, more attention to customer service needed.

Room Tip: If affordable, upgrade to a superior room. If not, request a room on the 1st or 2nd floor facing th...

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights after booking through Super breaks. We arrived by train so had a 30min walk to the hotel. Its location in the west end of Edinburgh is an up market area. We had a friendly greeting and when checked in were given room 36. This was the smallest double room I have ever stayed in and was devoid of any character ( or even any pictures). We had seen other fabulous rooms on the web site and can only assume because we were on a package deal were given the lowest category room. Although it was a double we were only given 1 cup and 1 glass. However having said that we spent very little time in the room with the city to explore.
The bar and breakfast room were ultra modern and the food as near to perfect as you can get. Staff could not be faulted.
All in all if we were going to spend time chilling in the hotel we would have been disappointed with our room but for a somewhere to lay your head it was fine.
Would we stay here again. Catagorely yes but we would pay an upgrade for one of the nice rooms.

Room Tip: The small doubles are in need of refurbishment.

Channing’s is a nice, homey hotel that is a great place to stay in Edinburgh. Channing’s is situated in a neighborhood outside of the city center which I actually liked because it was very quiet at night unlike the hotel where I stayed at on my final night. Yes, it is a walk, but for the ability to sleep well through the night without drunks waking me up every hour, it was worth it.
I stayed at Channing’s in March/April when it was the off season and thanks to this ended up getting an upgrade to the Discovery room which is bigger than the normal rooms with a great view.

Though the furnishings are slightly dated, the bed, chairs and couch were very comfortable and the place was very clean. I especially loved the bathroom, it was huge with a standing tube facing towards the view of the city center. It was perfect.

The breakfast, which for us was complimentary though not for everyone, was very good. They even offer a vegetarian option for those looking for it. Besides the hot breakfast, they had continental offerings as well which had many options. This was my first time eating Haggis and I have to say, it really was good, but everything that we were served was delicious. Channing’s probably had my favorite breakfast while traveling through Scotland. I have heard mixed reviews on the rest of the menu, but we only ate at breakfast so I can’t comment on anything else.

Lastly, the staff was great. They were all friendly and really did everything they could to make sure that our time in Edinburgh was perfect, especially the lovely brunette lady who worked on the breakfast staff whose name I forgot, unfortunately. She was funny, knowledgeable, intelligent, and just so personable. I would definitely recommend Channing’s.

Room Tip: If it isn't the busy season, ask if it is possible to get a room with a view. they may upgrade y...

Dear 'CuriousBinky',

Thank you for your recent review of our hotel. I am very glad to see that you have noticed the advantages of staying at hotels that are located slightly away from the city centre, as Edinburgh can be quite noisy at night, as any other capital. Additionally it is a great pleasure to hear that you find our bedrooms comfortable, breakfast worthy recommendation and our staff helpful and friendly.
Thank you for staying at Channings and hopefully we will welcome you back soon!

Kind regards,

Stayed at Channings edinburgh on 20May2014,upon arrival myself and partner was told parking in street was a £1·00 an hour and nearest free parking was a 5minute drive away.which is then a 20minute walk back to hotel. We checked into room 2on the ground floor, room was ok,nice bathroom though couldn't seem to get hot water out of the tap.Problem was in the morning their was a like a generator going off in the room when any other rooms were using their shower and the wall would vibrate, obviously old plumbing. We were told breakfast was till 10-30,arrived at 10-05 to be told breakfast finished at 10-00 and all that was left was cold buffet......when I questioned this was told chef wouldn't entertain us.Alas I think waiter took pity on us and got us what can only be described as dried left overs which we were left with no illusions that we had to hurry. At £109·00 a night I can only describe our stay as really disappointing.

We stayed at the Channings Hotel for 3 nights with 3 other couples who were all traveling together. The hotel is out side of the city center just far enough to be quiet and peaceful and close enough for an easy walk in. The lounge areas were comfortable and welcoming for our group to sit and chat and maybe share a pint! I would stay there again!

We first visited the Channings about seven or eight years ago, and apart from the room being a tad small were very impressed overall. However, we must say that out recent return was a disappointment. The room (26) was much larger, but the decor and fittings looked tired and shabby. Sideboards, cupboards and chairs were chipped and tired. the main table in the window was like something I'd buy at a car boot or auction - scratched and faded. Wallpaper was scratched and coloured in places.

The bed was really comfortable and we had a great night's sleep!

We arrived late so decided to have a drink in the bar and eat in the restaurant. The bar had apparently been re-furbished. But there were no photos or paintings on the wall so was totally soulless. The bar was trying to push itself as a cocktail bar. We had a lovely barmaid who tried the best she could - she had to make our cocktails for the very first time, having no training at all. As someone who has working in the hotel and catering trade for years, this is unforgivable for management to put an untrained employee to work with out adequate training. Especially when paying over £7.00 for a cocktail. We later on went to the Dome on George Street. Maybe the management of the Channings should go there to see how the professionals do it!

The food and wine were very good, but service was a bit inexperienced. The main problem was a total lack of atmosphere. Staff were, overall lovely and welcoming. Shame the management don't seem to care as much.

Overall, I felt the management has really let its eye off the ball. The biggest no no was to look out of my bedroom window to see staff sitting on the pavement outside supping mugs of coffee and smoking - an appalling let down from the hotel. There is a Travelodge around the corner. Next time we might go there. Sorry Channings, you've lost a customer!

Room Tip: Ask them when they are having a refurb and change of management
