“Good but without lift”

Good hotel, friendly staff and confortable. Wifi connection all the time and fast. Old-fashioned decoration, beautiful! Near to the principal comercial centre and main attractions of Edinburgh. The only problem was the stairs to carry our stuffs.. Only to the youngest or less weighting luggages.

After spending two nights in The Ballantrae Albany in Edinburgh it's a tale of two halves. The customer service from the more than helpful reception and restaurant/bar staff was faultless, especially the reception who were more than happy to provide local information and recommendations. Unfortunately, the hotel itself could do with some gentle improvements and modernisation. For example, the wall paper was in places ripped and hanging from the walls, as was the carpet. The rooms were adequate for a short stay however were quite close and it was easy to hear what neighbours through thin walls.

Did not take the shine of a great visit to a beautiful city, but would certainly think twice before staying at The Albany again.

Fantastic location, very easy to get round the city, Clean, comfortable,The continental breakfast was first class!! The room was spacious and comfortable, luxurious and clean. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were very helpful! i found it stylish with spacious rooms and Yes the decor is a bit dark, beiges and brown, but I liked it. Some will not, but that does not mean its dirty, I found it clean

As very well travelled people who often stay in city hotels all over Europe, we cannot emphasise enough to anyone just how welcoming, accommodating and courteous the staff are at the Ballantrae Albany Hotel.

The hotel is ideally located in very close proximity to the city centre and the rooms are both very comfortable and spacious and each has an unique character of their own. They are all individually named and have more than enough furniture to make you feel totally at home. Ours even had a selection of traditional books to read.

The staff are just simply the best !!

On booking in we were provided with a warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for Len who greeted us in reception. What a wonderful advert for such a wonderful and intriguing historical and proud city of Edinburgh. The food was faultless and the staff so well mannered and always smiling.

If you want a fantastic time in a fantastic city then go to the Ballantrae Albany in Edinburgh; we genuinely didn't want to leave and are already looking forward to returning there again in 2014. What an amazing experience.

Room Tip: Ask for 406 - cosy, warm, fab bathroom and sun facing.

Stayed here for two nights whilst in Scotland on business.
The hotel was gloomy and in need of a refurb. Photo's on website are not recent.
My employer originally booked the room for August and paid the Fringe exaggerated price, trip then moved to September, meaning we where paying over twice as much as the price currently offered on their website for a similar room.
Stayed in a twin room, decorated in black and red and the beds where draped in what i am convinced was a black velvet curtain (more suited to a madam's boudoir than a hotel room)
Asked to move rooms upon arrival, man at front desk was polite but unhelpful. Told to come back and speak to the Manager.
Restaurant very basic and awkwardly set out, so went out to eat all meals.
Returned on the second day and was told i would receive neither refund, room change, nor upgrade. Manager was unhelpful, argumentative and offered me only a 'competitive rate on future bookings'
An absolute rip off!

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere!

We booked an "Executive Double Room" for a 3 night stay including continental breakfast. Luckily our plans changed and we only stayed for 2 nights. The star rating on this hotel needs to be adjusted. The room was large and the bathroom a good size.... that's where it stops. The hand towels we had which were put in on our second morning were thread bare with holes in, bed side light switches didn't operate any of the lights, bedside lamps switched off manually, bathroom extractor switch on wall above the bathroom door, lamp shades tatty, paint off the wall and light bulbs out. No hairdryer in the room which when we asked a helpful man did find us one. Overall the room could have done with a lick of paint. Breakfast was very basic and the food didn't seem fresh! One morning the spilt cereal that was in front off the breakfast table stayed there throughout or breakfast even though there was plenty of staff on!!! Fire extinguishers propped open fire doors. No direction or leadership. Again the breakfast room needed a make over.... very tired looking!! We won't be rebooking.

Room Tip: If you want a 2* hotel at 4* prices this hotel is for you!

It's our first stay with the ALBANY and we would highly recommend it. No fancy frills but beautiful rooms, well appointed & clean with a small selection of sizes. It dose state a continental breakfast only, however, it has a great selection of cereal, juice & the usual content for that type of breakfast. You may also need a very small sat-Nav to get you around the Hotel, as it dose wander around a lot from room to room. You will have to walk or take a short taxi for the journey to visit the Royal Mile.
it is also close to the shopping center, and a local TESCO EXPRESS, with access close to Waverley train station - some 800m or so.

Room Tip: Ask for front of house or up the stairs because the cellar ones tent to have creaky ceilings/floors.
