Owner description: Hidden beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh’s deepest secret: a warren of hidden ‘closes’ where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have lain forgotten and abandoned…until now. Visit Edinburgh's most famous Close, which makes Edinburgh's Hidden History unmissable.

We really enjoyed this! Probably more so than the Edinburgh Castle and Camera Obscura. You really felt like you had stepped back in time temporarily and got a real feel for what it must have been like way back when.

They use real life stories of people who used to live in the area. Our tour guide was fantastic and so informative - pity about the rest of the people on our tour though... they were a tough crowd! We still laughed along with him loudly :o)

Don't want to give away too much, but I'm so pleased we did this - best attraction we visited in our time in Edinburgh. As a suggestion to the people that run the place... more re-enactments in the empty rooms would be ideal!

Well worth the money a great insight into life in mediaeval Edinburgh beautifully told by our guide, who led us into the murky depths of the city

really good tourist attraction, authenticity was even heightened by the tour guide who embodied in his role quite well, along with the information streaming out of him during the whole trip! the place really gives you the chills! i`d love it if they made it even more authentic with people representing the life, though...certainly recommend!

This is a very well organised tour of the underground city that the old town of Edinburgh is built upon, I really don't want to spoil it for anyone by saying more so give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

heard about this quite a while ago and was really looking forward to the visit, booked online in advance and we were pleased we had, when we arrived for 10am tour people who were trying to book for that day were being disappointed as the earliest slots were about 4pm, had we not booked we would not have been able to do the tour as we had travelled from Newcastle upon Tyne and our return train was at 4pm. In a group of 19 and the guide who was very good was also quite entertaining, not usually a nervous person but i would admit i would not have liked to be alone in that place it was fascinating and hard to believe so many families shared a room without any sanitation, and so many rooms and floors unbelievable, the tour lasted 1hr and the guide was keep reminding the group not to wander off, it would be quite easy to get lost down there. For foreign tourists they had a hand held recorder they could listen to should they not understand English We thought it very interesting when we finally reached Mary Kings Close which runs from top of Royal Mile down to the water at the bottom we were told up to 10,000 thousand people a day walked up and down that Close amid sewerage and any other human waste. Must say I was a bit of relief when it was time to come out, we had our photo taken on the close which you can purchase in the shop at the end of the visit for £6. Would definately like to do it again, apparently there are a few more like this in Edinburgh which we would definately do in the future
