“A little piece of heaven in the heart of the city.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2012

Arrived at 3pm and was welcomed by Andrew and Janet who showed me around the Labyrinth, chapel, kitchen and living room. They are gentle loving Christians who walk the talk. I have a double bedroom with small en suite on the ground floor. Janet introduced me to Guiness, a peaceful 13yr old wire-haired dog of Andrew's who accompanies me to the sitting room at the front of the house. Guiness likes to sit on the grey sofa with the tartan cushions. I took the leather sofa and settled down with 2 books, detox your spiritual life in 40 days by Peter Graystone and Henri Nouwen's The Inner Voice. A bell rings for dinner shortly after 6.30pm which is served at a shared table. Roast chicken, broccoli, potatoes and peas with apple pie and ice-cream. In-between meals guests are invited to help themselves to tea/coffee and biscuits. Breakfast is 8am - 9am. Prayers are said in the Chapel at 9.15am and 9.15pm. There are other services too. I came to Emmaus for peace and found it. Most of my time was spent praying sleeping and eating and on Sunday Janet gave me details of Kings church where I attended the Sunday service. This was full of modern praise (with drums) and attended by young families. I retreated to Emmaus House for a cheese sandwich and a chat with Andrew before continuing with my reading and prayer. Thank you for your welcome everyone. I look forward to seeing you again. Nicola

Tannkyou Janet and Andrew and all fellow guests for a lovely stay. I was here to read and write in the Central LIbrary was set up with a delicious breakfast around a communal table and returned to a wonderful evening meal and welcome from very interesting fellow guests and friends. The feel of community and welcome is something very different in todays culture and I warmly recommend it. All people are made welcome.

I have stayed at Emmaus House about half a dozen times sometimes on my own and sometimes with another person. It is a really welcoming and homely place when visiting the city of Edinburgh.
Many people seem to be coming and going and it is always an enriching experience.
The communal table is a great place for people to meet others on their respective journeys. There is a great respect for every person of any persuasion, race or ethnicity. The breakfast is healthy with choices of fruit, yoghurts, bread or croissants and also a range of cereals.
There is a dog in the house called Guinness who is a lovely gentle character. The staff are all friendly and could not be more helpful.
There is a winding staircase as is typical in this type of house. The rooms are mostly en suite, very clean and in good repair. There is a TV in the shared lounge but not the bedrooms which I preferred but might not suit everyone.
Emmaus House is located near Tollcross and there is easy access to buses to get across the city. There is a 'holy hut' - a large, bright and welcoming place to pray in the garden which offers a reflective space seldom found in today's busy, noisy world.

Room Tip: There is only one room on the ground floor for folks who will struggle with stairs.

A wonderful welcome and I felt right at home here! I stayed here for four days, and then returned for four more days. Emmaus House is a great location and there is plenty to see and do in Edinburgh. It is convenient for buses to the city centre and to the airport. Andrew and Janet are very helpful and welcoming. Breakfast is shared together at a large table and evening meals are tasty home-cooking and good value too.
The large library lounge is available for guests and if guests want to attend short chapel services in the morning and evening they are welcome. If you want a comfortable place to stay where you will meet friendly people, then I highly recommend Emmaus House!

I stayed for a few nights at Emmaus House while defending my PhD thesis. It was so nice to have a "home" to come back to during this stressful time. Everyone there was very supportive. The communal meals and prayers were wonderful. The weather was gorgeous, soft fluffy snow lay over everything, mind you the locals did not seem to appreciate this as much as I did. Heck I even got to do a bunch of snow shoveling which, for this Canadian, was a plus. Highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in February 2011 and were given the warmest of welcomes by Janet et al. What a place! Perfect location and very reasonable - they ought to charge more frankly! Lovely en suite room. Other more permanent guests were very welcoming too, and there is a chapel at the back of the lovely house for evening and morning prayers (sadly we missed all of these). Communal meals (if you were on time!) and given own key to come and go as we pleased. Brilliant, and unforgettable.

Emmaus House is a delightful place to stay. I've stayed several times now, keep going back. It's like a home from home, run by such lovely people. They are so warm and welcoming (without being remotely 'in your face'), unlike many B&B's I've stayed in. The bedrooms are spacious, comfortable, en suite, and the breakfasts are great. You eat around one large wooden table in an informal and comfortable dining room, so if you want to be alone with your own tiny table in a big corporate dining area this may not be the place for you. Personally, I love the homely feel of it and the warm welcome. The location is great too, very close to the centre yet in a fairly quiet residential road. really good value too. I highly recommend it!
