Owner description: Welcome to Greyfriars Kirk, a worshipping congregation of the Church of Scotland in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, where a church has stood since 1620. We are a welcoming, inclusive community, and respond to local needs in a variety of ways. Worship takes place during the week as well as on Sundays in English and Gaelic. The Kirk is also major venue for the arts and classical music, a tourist destination and through the Grassmarket Community Project, a supporter of Edinburgh's most vulnerable citizens. Our Kirkyard boasts, among many others, the graves of Joseph Black, James Hutton, Mary Erskine and most famous of all, Greyfriars Bobby. In addition, it also house the grave of a certain Tom Riddle - J K Rowling's inspiration for the character of Lord Voldemort.

We ambled around this wonderful place keen to get a glimpse into the life of Greyfriars Bobby but impressive as the place is, it was the people who really brought it to life for us. We showed interest in the history of the site and they were very keen to tell us the many stories associated with it. The lovely gentleman with the clicker and the one with the kilt made our visit worthwhile but there were so many other people such as those working on the herb garden and playing the organ who contributed to us having such a good time. This really is a community who care about their history and the people around them.

Take the time to research the history connected to Greyfriars Church and the connected cemetery; both will continue to fascinate long after your visit. Most beautiful and unique cemetery and kirk I have seen. You have access to the connected Covenenter's Prison only from a 3rd party tour company but well worth the extra effort! One of my favorite locations in all of Edinburgh.

Such a relaxing time to reflect on history and architecture. You see the surrounding city with all its beautiful buildings and study the grave stones inside. For some fun, look for some Harry Potter character names on the grave stones. Our kids enjoyed spending time in there. No cost to enter.
