Owner description: Welcome to Greyfriars Kirk, a worshipping congregation of the Church of Scotland in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, where a church has stood since 1620. We are a welcoming, inclusive community, and respond to local needs in a variety of ways. Worship takes place during the week as well as on Sundays in English and Gaelic. The Kirk is also major venue for the arts and classical music, a tourist destination and through the Grassmarket Community Project, a supporter of Edinburgh's most vulnerable citizens. Our Kirkyard boasts, among many others, the graves of Joseph Black, James Hutton, Mary Erskine and most famous of all, Greyfriars Bobby. In addition, it also house the grave of a certain Tom Riddle - J K Rowling's inspiration for the character of Lord Voldemort.

Well it is easy to find as it is very near the Greyfriars Bobby statue so go for it if you feel brave! Worth visiting just before twilight for the full effect. Start with Greyfriars Bobbt memorial and go from there. Really fastening graves and all very old. Check out one of the tours if you can as this will get you into the Coventators section that was closed to the public. We had a bit of a freaky moment when we left and a raven landed immediatley at our feet. Shudder!

My girlfriend and I went to visit Greyfriars kirkyard the morning after our arrival in Edinburgh. The night before was just a blur, and the relaxing stroll the next morning did wonders for my aching head. I had done some reading on Edinburgh before our trip and we were looking forward to exploring the old graveyard. We got some really nice shots and even said hello to George Mackenzie! On my return, I would like to take one of the night time tours of the cemetery to see if it as spooky as they say. The scenery (great view of the castle, the Herriott School, and the surrounding buildings is great and the eons of time evoked is truly awesome. You really should see it for yourself.

I so enjoyed walking thru the graveyard (Church was closed) and experiencing all the history. I find it fascinating to walk thru old graveyards and read the inscriptions on the tombstones and markers. I've also been on a tour that took us thru at night. The graveyard is certainly worth a visit.

really interesting church, and lots of great grave stones- if you are into this sort of thing! There is grey friars Bobby, his Master and his friend, Smellie's grave, amongst others!! it would be nice to have a map of these that you could go on a hunt with (for children, obviously!!) Free attraction again.

This place has it all, history, spooks and great architecture. This place has something for all ages and well worth a look around. Even if it is to see wee bobby!
