This is a great spot to hit up on a nice day in Edinburgh. The site contains a number of monuments and an observatory. So the trip yields multiple photo opportunities and historical lessons all in one.

Calton Hill is at the end of Princes St. and on the opposite direction of the Castle. You can easily spot this hill from North Bridge(next to the Waverley Bridge), a good location to shoot a postcard quality scenic photo. Going up there isn't difficult. You take a set of stairs from the bottom of the hill on the corner of Waterloo, Calton and Regent Rd. Once get there an open grassy field and trails around the Hill give you broad and far away views of the City. The hills of Arthur's Seat is acrossed from it, and Palace of Holyroodhouse is below it. The telephoto lense will bring the world second longest single span cantilever Forth Rail Bridge to your view. On top of the hill there are Nelson's Monument and tower, Portuguese cannon, National Monument, Dugald Stewart Monument,Old Observatory and City Observatory. I visited it on a sunny and warm afternoon on Sunday, there were locals, visitors, families with young children on strollers, energetic young adults climbing on the steep steps of acropolis National Monument. The breathtaking views, greenery, and blossom yellow gorse and daisy flowers along the Royal Terrace Road going down to the Regent Rd., ideally for one to enjoy a city break away from the the hustle and bustle touristy area. The Nelson Monument; The Portuguese cannons, Observatories, the unfinished Acropolis of National Monument, the backdrop of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags are popular points for the photo opps.

That is a place where you can see most of the city. It would be better if the weather was clear, so if you have the lucky to be in Edinburgh in a sunny day this is a "must see" The way up is not so hard, but the place has got a lot of litter, so it looks like it has been abandoned by the authorities
