Not so easy to access the view of the monument is better down than up. The advantage of being up is that you can have a view of Edinbourgh city

It's about a 15 minute journey from Waverley Station, and its well worth it! The statues and monuments are gorgeous, as are the views of Edinburgh. I highly recommend taking a walk up the hill! It's not as uphill as you think too - I actually found it easier to walk up to Calton Hill than the castle.

There are a number of routes to the top, from steps to a selection of paths.

From the top you get panoramic views of the city.

Well worth the walk.

Well worth the climb up the steps and little bit of hill to the top of Calton hill. Beautiful views of all over Edinburgh from every angle on a clear day. It's a photographers dream to go up there on a nice day or when everything's covered in snow, makes such beautiful pictures.

This underrated hill is a good free attraction in the city; it has views of the city to rival those on top of Edinburgh castle without the expense and there are several sites on the hill to see, such as Nelson's Monument and the National Monument.

There are steps to quickly climb up the hill or a spiralling walk that goes around the hill, stopping off at a couple of points to give views of the expanses of the area; I recommend the spiralling path, not because it is easier but because it does show the full view of the city as you walk along.

On top of the hill you will find a number of sites to see, most free besides Nelson's Monument which has a moderate admission's fee.

My advice is to go on a bright morning and walk around Carlton Hill, seeing all of the sights and stopping off there for a picnic on the hilltop. The combination of the open air and the great sights of the city will make fine scenery to enjoy your lunch to.
